Solved Acres???

I was wondering what acres means? I know that it shows the land u own but how do u get land?? Do i have to capture a colony? Somewhere i read that i have to work for the governor but ive already been working for him (and others) forever and he only wants me to destroy pirate ships. So how can i get land and what can i do with it?

Get a Letter of Marque from one of the governors, then go fighting enemies of his nation.
When you return, you'll be promoted and gain land for each promotion.

I have a letter of Marque from Britain and they're currently not at war with anyone. Do i get promoted as well when i kill pirates ships?
