I once tried to sail between two fairly close islands (Redmond and Hispaniola?) without going to the world map. I knew about how long I'd have to sail, so I just sailed in real time for about 5 hours of game time, or one hour real time.
About the time I expected to see the new island, I saw the *bottom* of the island in the water, but nothing above it. I encountered no ships along the way, of course. When I went to the world map, I was right next to the new island, and immediately got the "Land ho!" message.
The game thought I was still in the general location of the old island, as I could still see it for a long time and could still get ranges with the spyglass. There was *something* where the new island was supposed to be, but it wasn't a complete island. Once I'd gone to the world map, it updated, with my correct position, and I was at the new island when I left the world map.
It would be nice if the game would generate random encounters in a situation like this, or switch locations when you're closer to another island. I don't know if it's possible to make the game do this. Five hours of game time beats several days on the world map. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
