There is no feeling like the first time you get a game you'd been waiting to try out. The whole world stops - The cell phone gets turned off, shades get shut in hopes of a prying eye at the door hoping you'll answer it will quickly get the feeling you're not at home and leave you to your new found passion of being a swashbuckler in search of fortune and glory!
My first thought on this game is, I cannot believe how much it acts like a `self-contained` world. Within five minutes of starting up the game, i was in Port Royale (your English starting port) sailing up to Santiago to intercept a barque per the Governor's instructions. As I made my way up (and have quickly intercepted and dispatched of the ship) Out from Santiago comes 3 Fast Galleons - labeled "Invasion Fleet", sailing towards Port Royale!
Not to have my home ransacked, I quickly sailed into battle on my sloop, firing my cannons at sailing full sails to smash my ship into theres and begin an epic sword fight. I quickly took over each ship in the Invasion Fleet, and sailed back towards Port Royale for my first promotion!
Later on in the game, I sailed right past a Dutch Invasion Fleet who took over a Spanish town, and later watched as another one took over St. Kitts! This was incredible - You are not the only one out there trying to build an empire this time. Want to effect a town's economy? Begin sinking trade vessels and smuggler's on route to a specific town. Quickly a town can go from a Wealthy Capital to a Poor Colony in no time. Want to cause unrest and uproar? Every so often a new governor will be dispatched to a town. When the Governor doesn't arrive the people become uneasy. Now is the perfect time to sail try to take over the town!
Even the Indians play a role in this game. Watch as a canoe of Indian raiders try to attack colonies, or sail to a settlement to meet with them or get a mission. There are even Jesuit settlements for which you can sail to and receive escort missions.
The graphics are incredible and run quite smooth on my machine. While the people have a somewhat "cartoonish" look to them, it is hardly something that will keep you on the fence the first time you get into a sword fight with a veteran Spaniard who's skills at the blade can keep draw out your swordfight and keep you in suspense! Something else to acknowledge about the look and feel of everything in the game is how it draws you into this little world known as Sid Meier's Pirates. You become completely hooked on what is going on, and at rediscovering fame and fortune. The Governor's look slightly pompous, the barmaids ... er .... wenchy, and the Spaniard's - EVIL SPANIARDS!
This is a game that can keep you entertained for hours and hours at a time mates. I put the CD in at 4:00pm yesterday and wished I would've set an alarm clock to tell me when to go to bed. The time was quickly midnight and I have a 5am `wake-up` call to get to work!
My First Impression of Sid Meier's Pirates! : This is truly a remake of a classic and a welcomed one at that. `Pre-order` it now and salivate in awe of this incredible masterpiece. Break up with your girlfriends, file temporary separation papers from your wives, take a sabbatical from work and tell your school or university that you never needed their toilet paper anyway - and tell everyone that your searching for fame, fortune and glory!
