[WIP] Ships and Scurvy RPG: Feedback appreciated!

The turn based land combat looks interesting. I'd need to see more to get a feel for what it's like. I did quite like your original land combat demo, and hope it carries over well to turn based battle.

[WIP] Ships and Scurvy RPG: Feedback appreciated!

Sorry for taking a while to check back. It's not trouble, as I'd like to offer what little help I can with your project. Note that the following might sound like I'm dictating, so please forgive me for that. It's how I best describe my thoughts and suggestions, unfortunately. Also, I'll ramble...

[WIP] Ships and Scurvy RPG: Feedback appreciated!

Oh, I've played Swords and Sandals! I really enjoyed the games, and Crusader. Your land battle demonstration looks quite good, and this project is looking to be excellent. To offer some more usable feedback, I think it is a good idea between you and Thagarr about moving ships during battle. You...

Included in Build Distinguish between different playstyles

Fair enough. Your original solution sounds best.

Well, you could say there are two kinds of pirate. General pirate, other pirates will attack you if they think it is profitable, but otherwise won't. If you were in the navy, they may be more willing to attack you for fear of you reporting their activities, or attacking them at an inopportune...

Well, if there is a good gameplay reason for why those condition were originally in place. But, I can't really see much reason. It appears to only punish players, and discourage them from changing roles.

Pirates oughtn't to care if you were fighting them in the past--many pirates would be at each others' throats given an opportunity. Unless they have the idea you're a spy, or you did something to offend the given pirate or his group personally (ticked off the Red Flag Fleet, and now they all...

Theoretically, you could still hire skilled crewmen, and have them follow you when going ashore. Their ability to apply bonuses to the ship would be hindered by their non-officer status, however.

Eh, couldn't you claim credit for both nations in reality? You can only take the captured ship and goods to one nation's port, but you can probably still keep enough evidence to get a bounty off a second or third nation?

Planned Feature Characters sustain damage after a fight and better HP balancing

Personally, I prefer relation levels with various factions over a binary good/evil metre. However, tht's not to say it needs to change for PotC, as you've no doubt structured things well around that system.

Planned Feature Large Ships for Rival Pirates

I approve of any interaction between Asian powers made possible in the game (more or less).

Planned Feature Survival During Boarding: Captured by Enemy Nation

Partly, that is because these sorts of games have poor engagement design for if you have a setback. In Mount and Blade, if you lose your high level army and your companions are scattered to the wind and you lose some expensive gear, what's the point in continuing from there? The setback has no...

Planned Feature Survival During Boarding: Captured by Enemy Nation

Well, the way it was handled in Mount and Blade and Pirates! was that you would be held for a while then released for a ransom, or you escape. If you're considered a pirate, escaping or being let off on ransom might be harder. You could simply adjust the chances of survival based off your...

Planned Feature Large Ships for Rival Pirates

I recall the Red Flag Fleet of China having an armada which the local governments and armies couldn't stop. They were a pirate fleet. Can't remember how many full sized war ships they had. With the potential of alternate history, I'd say it should be possible for pirates to obtain and use...

Planned Feature Characters sustain damage after a fight and better HP balancing

Not sure exactly how it works, but randomizing the level of spawned crew based off one or two factors seems the cleanest solution at first blush.

Planned Feature Survival During Boarding: Captured by Enemy Nation

Maybe. I thought there were cases of privateers getting reasonable treatment by enemy nations when captured, which didn't apply to ones considered pure pirates? Can't remember, so I may be completely off base. Certainly, your conduct as a privateer for nation 1 would effect your standing and...

Planned Feature Characters sustain damage after a fight and better HP balancing

Yeah, I hate it when enemies level up with you. It makes everything feel... pointless. Turned me right off of Dragon Age Origins and FFVIII. One way to do that is to have a more realistic mix of crew at various skill levels on board a ship. Some crew tend to have higher levels, but all crews...

Planned Feature Friendly Contact on High Seas

Is it possible to demand surrender or a toll for passage, currently? If not, talking to a friendly or neutral captain outside of combat might be a good place to negotiate that. Realistically, the captain isn't like to come over to a threatening ship unless really desperate, and you wouldn't do...

    Planned Feature Town under attack

Can't think of anything to add. It will be nice if the AI will eventually be able to make effective use of the terrain in HoO, or to have the maps change so that there are makeshift blockades on the road and the like. Mercenaries 2 is apparently a good game to look at for AI making very good...
