    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Ah, that must be my earliest version then. Armada helped me with it, so that makes sense that that is the model he has. Here is the complete version, with texture https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43901618/CArmstrong/Models/Carronade%20v2.0.mb...

    My Application

I'd be happy to help get you started on ship modeling, but that is an area where we already have quite a few experienced people working, so it would probably be best if you were to focus on buildings, props, swords, and the like, at least for now. It'd be great to eventually see drydocks and...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

The new one looks better! did you take off the wheels to pivot the carriage, or did you receive the model without them? just wondering because that might explain why they seemed especially low. But yeah 38 gun ships like Shannon definitely had 32pdr carronades, not 24pdrs.

Welcome! it should be great to have you aboard! your credentials are certainly impressive, and in an area where your skills are needed:)

    Officers in Royal Navy

It depends on if the ship is already in commission or not. If she is, tehn the officers already with the ship will stay in place, if it is a new ship, there will likely be some who are assigned by the admiralty, and some that the captain can choose for himself. this would also be the case if the...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Hopefully very soon! Just running my work by a more experienced modeler before I reveal it, so as soon as he replies and I make any required changes :dance
  7. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Ah, so it will be an anglicised version (generally the appearance of prizes was anglicised after their first major refit, which would be right away if they were extensively damaged) You could even call it an english Canopus class ship of the line, as it will probably be much closer in appearance...
  8. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Yet another ship I was planning on building! oh well, can't get them all. :( Certainly a better design than the English three decked 2nd rates, though the three deckers supposedly had an advantage broadside to broadside by being taller, though in all other respects (sailing, firepower etc) were...
  9. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

The carronades look rather small...but good to see them there! The other ship looks intriguing!:) Hmm, a Temeraire class 74? Or an extremely large and built up indiaman?
  10. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Hmm, if I had to choose one to omit It would be the one with the white strake carried around the bow, because both it and the trincomalee are schemes that likely wouldn't have been used until after the end of the napoleonic wars. They all look good! one minor thing: the upper cheek is still...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Looks great!:woot Sounds good! but will you do a different paint scheme for each version, or have all the paint schemes for all the variants? About the Windows: not necessarily, there is no reason why she couldn't have had 7 windows to start with (though the modern plan does show 8) The remnant...
  12. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Good choice with the hinged ports! sorry I forgot to reply to that part. :dohThe Trincomalee type stern was the standard in the Royal Navy since long before the Shannon was built and afterwards as well, but I suppose the Lacedamonian type isn't that far off and there is no way of saying what...
  13. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

I would go with 8... It looks like you strayed from the plan if the trincomalee and based some of the stern details from the model of the Leda class HMS Lacedamonian in the NMM collection? http://todd.mainecav.org/model/macedonian/pics/lacedaemonian2.jpg
  14. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

I'd say red for the interior of the bulwarks, and white belowdecks, like the bottom sides of the decks. I forgot to mention that the vertical head timbers should be the same color as the headrails as well. It looks great by the way! :onya If you do end up making multiple paintschemes, I'd...
  15. Captain Armstrong

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

To my knowledge Captain Broke had the Shannon painted with an yellow/ochre or white stripe underneath the gunports, to match the scheme of several american frigates (Chesapeake and President) then in Boston which the Shannon was blockading. The idea being that American ships attempting to run...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Just want to be sure you don't rush things too much :p I grew impatient with some of my earliest ships and they weren't as well done as a result. To be fair, youre doing a great job with the Shannon, she is much better done than my first ship, I just wouldn't want to see shortcuts taken with the...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

well there is certainly much that could be used from one on the other, and then readjusted, such as the deck fittings. But I think it would be much easier to just build a new hull, there are so many difficulties that could be created with the placement of the gunports and different sheer and...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Sounds like a good plan!:danceThose carvings look like the ones on the Trincomalee, just not as tall. keep up the good work! That would be rather...redundant IMO, seeing as the Pallas class is exactly the same as the Hebe, just expanded by a couple of feet. The authoritative work on french...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Welcome aboard as an official member of the team! I'd say finish the Shannon for POTC/COAS/POTBS first, then worry about Hearts of Oak Modelling. It will be good practice, and the polygon and interior requirements are going to be so different for Hearts of Oak that it makes sense to build the...
