    WIP - HMS Ontario

Finishing up the last bit of work on the ship model and readying it for the asset store now. I ended up reworking the entire ship hierarchy to make it cleaner for the dynamic lines and guns so it saves me time on the backend for later changes. I have 4 books with lord knows how many...

    Video as promised...

@Bava These are the only decent rigging references I have found in my books. This is from Harland's, and shows most of the rigging like a snow but nothing specific for snows other than general diagrams. I still can't find exactly where the sheet attached for the Ontario, so I went with a double...

Well, VR meaning more that the UI will be displayed in 3D space instead of as a 2D overlay on the view. I just want to have the player as a character that can walk around the deck and look at things for the 'UI' rather than have a persistent display over the view. I have a new char controller...

    WIP - HMS Ontario

Actually, my goal would be to make it completely VR. Skip making the UI flat for 2d and force all interactions to be 3D from the deck.

I am currently taking the source code of it apart to see how he is doing the slip calculations which is the only thing in ToW I didn't really do as well as I wanted. I was using Froude for drag/slip, Archimedes for buoyancy, and a mix of Newton and Bernoulli for the sail pressure, so if the same...

You hadn't heard of the HMS Surprise sim? Wow, you are in for a treat.
  8. Captain Murphy

    WIP - HMS Ontario

My eventual goal is to make a simulator similar to the HMS Surprise one but with newer graphics. I have like 99% of the code from the old Tides of War physics, as it was WAAAAY more complicated than it needed to be, almost on par with the surprise game. I am going to try and get a video done...

    WIP - HMS Ontario

and... finally.... added a detail function to increase the number of verts on the lines for LOD purposes so that the player ship can look smoother when up close. So, now into how it works: The ship model has been set up with specific hierarchy and layout of the objects so that the yards and...

I reworked the targets and tried to match that reference picture a bit better, thanks @Bava . I think that it looks sufficiently complex now, haha! Looking up from the helm station it is a pretty good bit of lines now.
  11. Captain Murphy

    WIP - HMS Ontario

@Bava that is fantastic! It gives me a reference for line slack as well. I am currently redoing the points so that it can set the target of the rope generator as well as the slack that the line would have. This way sail sheets can slack more than braces, which slack more than lifts, etc.

A bit more life added to them now. They are still static when not required to move, but they bend based on the length of the line. The longer the line, the more segments it adds to the line renderer, as well. The next step will be to add a tension factor so the lines will look more natural for...
  13. Captain Murphy

    WIP - HMS Ontario

Any feedback would be appreciated, I am working on little to no info for this model, and what info I can find on brigs is only for/of models. I have used references from larger ships for the lifts, sheets, and tacks as those are pretty much the same. The braces are not quite right, I can bet. I...

    WIP - HMS Ontario

Here is an updated shot highlighting the running lines. I am using a book about ship models as the main reference as I cannot find much in the way of rigging info for brigs, and even less for snows. If someone has a reference for the mizzen rigging that would be appreciated so I can see if I did...
  15. Captain Murphy

    WIP - HMS Ontario

Here is the latest version. The lifts are now dynamic as well, so they can stretch and allow the yards to drop.
  16. Captain Murphy

    WIP - HMS Ontario

One of the models that I have been working on lately. Flannery made the model, I am just finishing up the textures and rigging. The rigging has been interesting as I am testing out the ability to draw the rigging using a line renderer so that it can be broken into running and standing versions...

    WIP - 24lb Cannon Model

Waiting for Unity to publish it on the Asset store. In the meantime here is a demo video of it.

I had to look twice to tell that it wasn't the Enterprise Refit game I made in Unity a while back. Whole album: USS Enterprise Refit Showcase - Unity 5

    WIP - 24lb Cannon Model

Time for the math to begin with lots of trial and error! I am aiming for a max range of around 4200m and a muzzle velocity of ~510m/s. I got pretty close after a while with the 24lb gun. Not sure if it is 100% accurate to the real flight of the ball, but that will do for game purposes.

    WIP - 24lb Cannon Model

First pass on the animation. Still trying to get the wheel timing to look right while still ending at exactly 360 degrees when complete. Will keep tweaking the distance it recoils until I can get it pretty close.
