Sunk at start

Xiathorn

Landlubber
The instant I get onboard my ship at Oxbay, at the beginning, I'm killed. My ship is sunk. I survive with my little dingy, but come on, what do I do with that?

Is this supposed to occur? If not, why is it? Literally, the instant the game loads me in my ship the fort fires on me and my little lugger dies.

First you have to tell what Version you're playing!
I know, we had that bug early and to overcome, you'll have to change your Flag to french
because you're flying the english one!! French hate English and vice versa! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

Right, sorry. V1.0 of PoTC, Build 13. Gunna change flags now, I set it to neutral (it was running the British one) but that failed to fix it.

of course not. your personal relation with france is hostile as well, so raising your personal (neutral) flag doesn't work either. just try the portugese one.

Another possibility : walk to Greenford and ask for your ship to be repaired here. So you will be able to exit from Greenford in stead of Oxbay... You could pretend your crew saw the French attack while sailing to Greenford

Meh, it was just easier to hoist false colour and then change them when I was out at sea than wandering all over to Greenford. That place sucks anyway.

My captain was trying out his newly purchased spyglass when he noticed a patch of cloud appeared to be too close to the ground for it to be normal. As the cloud moved closer, the cold realisation that it was a ship - a warship, no less, based on the size of the foresail - tingled down his spine. He rushed to his ship and ordered his men to abandon all their tasks and immediately put to sea, then sprinted up to the quarter deck to change the ensign himself. The lookout had also realised the danger, and had been halfway down the rigging when his captain stormed aboard, so he quickly reversed his direction and switched the proud British flag that lofted lazily above the mainmast to something altogether less damning.

Portugese flag failed, by the way. Don't know why. I just hoisted the French fleur-de-lys and hoped the British warships wouldn't give a damn about some insignificant lugger, so consumed they would be in defending the colony.

You're a good storyteller, very romantic! Glad you made it out of Oxbay! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

LOL Samething happened to me first go at game ...but I ended up with a French ship after boarding the Battleship and surviving ( barely) the action...I used the Yacth btw and practiced fighting with the mate until the option dissapeared . I didnt like the getting sunk part...and it took hours of being shot at before I figured out I was French ! LOL ...I changed to the Nathan Flag and got sunk By a French port....in my new BBS..so I reloaded my save and fugured out how to swap flags .

VERY strange that some people still have this issue. If you choose the red Nathaniel Nation at game start, you should not be sunk at game start at all, if I remember correctly. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

it passes with experience. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> then you just get away or board them, gunboat or not. one thing that might turn out really well is simply starting in a different port. you don't need the stinkin' tutorial anyway.
