Reworking the Game's Music

So would anyone be willing to actually compile a bigger and more interesting selection of music tracks for Build 14?

i most certainly would, as i would be doing it anyway once i'll be using that build version. but don't forget that the way the system works was changed in b14 a7. i think.

That is very true. Pretty much completely rewritten. So would it be OK if we wait with this mod until we have a stablish Alpha that you can work on and then you make the music pack? I can get you a lot of useful files, most of them are already on the FTP, but I still have a lot that isn't. Just tell me if you need something. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

well, if i can get the newer version of the music alias files (or whatever that has been changed) i could conjur up a music pack anyway, i think.

The files are in <a href="http://piratesahoy.net/build/Build%2014%20Alpha%208%20WIP/20%20Feb%202008/Pieter%20Boelen%20Code.zip" target="_blank">here</a> in the PROGRAM\SOUND\ALIAS folder. The biggest challenge is getting all music tracks together, on a similar volume and assinging them to where appropriate. Making the actual code should be easy.

ahh.... i can't do volume. they usually don't differ too badly, but they're all pretty soft. maybe i can figure it out somehow though.

Convert tp MP3, then use <a href="http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">MP3Gain</a>, then convert back. Should work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

wish i'd found that one earlier. should be of great use! i'll see what i can do. what kind of locations need adding? i already know of the fort.

Locations? We're talking mainly about adding more TRACKS! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_confused.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="icon_confused.gif" />

fine with me. but adding music for forts is nice anyway. should i dump the stock game music?

Nonono; I want to KEEP everything we've got, just ADD more. Try and add music from Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean and other films and such. Just to add some more variety. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

i don't think that would work too well. besides, i don't have any of the original soundtracks anymore. i never really liked any of them, so i removed them.

Why wouldn't it work too well? And I <i>do</i> have the soundtracks, so that shouldn't be that much of a problem.

i don't need the old soundtracks, really, so nevermind that. i don't think it would work too well because the music styles would be very different. the original soundtracks aren't orchestral at all.

i'll start with the storm music. what do you think is better, 'up is down' (funnily appropriate. sounds quite well, and i use it myself) or 'seamonster' from sindbad?

Hmm; both seem a bit inappropriate to me. Too cheerful. I think "To the Bottom of the Sea" from Cutthroat Island would work wonders there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

naah, i don't like that one. it sounds too peaceful to me. storms are regularily just for fun instead of being a nuisance. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Peaceful? To The Bottom of the Sea? HUH??? If ANY track sounds stormy, that one does. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

i'm pretty sure i listened to it in the past. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_confused.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="icon_confused.gif" />

It was written for the storm scene in Cutthroat Island when the crew is set overboard in their little rowboat. To me it sounds dramatic enough to accompany the Titanic sinking. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
