Question about skills

Out_of_rum

Sailor Apprentice
Hi everyone, sorry if this has already been answered, i tryed to search if a similar question has been asked before, but i could not find anything.

I got my hands on a tier 3 ship, but my navigators skill level is only 35. As much as i enjoy the extra cargo space and fire power, the penalty to my main characters stats start to hurt when doing quests (im level 9).

How do i increase my navigators navigation skill, is direct sailing best? World map sailing doesn't effect the skill, right? and is it best to sell the tier 3 ship and then get a ship that suits the current navigation skill, or should i keep the tier 3 until i have increased the skill? Or should i just start searching for a better navigator? Any advice is wellcome :)

I would love to help but I can't, since I am on a five day trip away from home and my PC.

Maybe when I return; unless someone can help you before me.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the confusion, the navigator is level 7 and his navigation is 35. Anyway, I found a better officer with 62 navigation, and before that, i managed to get a decent war schooner, which serves as a good temporary ship.

The main ways to increase the Navigation skill :

#1 - Sail in storms. Obviously for this to really be a viable option you have to at LEAST have the talent "Sailing in storms". If you get the Jonas talisman (Long way to the gallows completion), then you take very little damage while sailing in storms and can therefore just find a storm, and sail in it at 8x speed until your ship is almost dead, which is a while, and then go repair and repeat. You go up a % in the current navigation level every few seconds.

#2 - Quests. Escort, Ferrying passengers, and delivering cargo all gives a chunk of navigation skill upon completion.

#3 - Sure, just sailing around works. Very slowly =P.

Yes! Definitely! Sailing in storms. :thumbs1 I totally forgot about that. :facepalm This is definitely number one for leveling up navigation/sailing skills. Try to get that damage control perk tho because you will most likely get a fire in the ship from a lightning strike or something else.

Also, what I used to do when I was in that situation: I scamsaved in front of a tavern and reentered it, until I found a Navigator with 60+ navigation. Took like 15 reloads. (Might be considered as cheat tho )
