If you haven't seen the main site for Sid Meiers Pirates!, then you missed that Prima's Official Strategy Guide has released a guide on Sid Meier's Pirates!.

Here is the main site update:
<a href="http://www.atari.com/pirates/pirates/news_story.php?id=99" target="_blank">http://www.atari.com/pirates/pirates/news_...story.php?id=99</a>

Here is the Link to Buy it:
<a href="http://estore.primagames.com/eguide_detail.aspx?prodid=AI2006" target="_blank">http://estore.primagames.com/eguide_detail...x?prodid=AI2006</a>

When I get the game, I am buying one of these because I know that Prima's Guides are very, very helpful.

The one and only Prima guide I have bought was just about useless. So, needless to say I will not be buying this one or any others.

I am pleased you like them and I hope they help you out. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

most of the bilge rats here will tell you "<i><span style='color:blue'>we don't need no stinkin' strategy guide"</i></span> cuz they are true buccaneers with swill in their veins and guides are for large breasted women who dance better than them. anyway, i have it. $20 is nuttin' to me and it has some good hints, tips, and advice...

Mack, I bought the one for Earth and Beyond just to compare it to the game. I was in it from BETA to Sunset. The Prima guide was near useless in my opinion. I do not fault anyone for buying one, I always say whatever helps YOU enjoy the GAME you purchased! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Yea I got it too ($14 from Amazon). I'm one of those nuts that when he likes something has to have whatever is available, good or bad. So, I have both the standard and LE versions of the game and the strat guide... I can't help it...

Actually there are some useful tips in it.

I don't understand why you guys don't like it so much. When I bought guides to the Sims series and Civilization 3 Play the World, they helped considerably. The one think I like are the catalogs that aren't sometimes in the original game catalogs (like the Sims). But i guess trial and error works for some, and some people just don't like the guide (which is totaly alright).

cap, some guides do suck but, as you say, primagames does put together the best ones. these guys don't like them cuz they think they're wussy and admitting they use them would be like saying they also play hop scotch or jacks... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Made this an ANNOUNCEMENT, as I think it's important info! Thank you, Captain Python! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Typically I don't buy guides, but they can be helpful - I do have a couple for some more complicated games I've played - ones I've played over and over again. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Years ago, you didn't have to buy 'guides' as it would all be in the manual. Another money saving/money making scheme.. bah humbug.

O' course years ago,a game O' Ping Pong strategy guide would be about 5 sentences <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

And it amazes me how some people will not read the manual, but will buy a strategy guide. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

But you know, what we do here in this forum can constitute a form of "guide" as we are sharing our tips and tricks - and mods! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I read the strategy guide while standing in BestBuy, and found myself arguing with it. Who do they get to write those things?

Well, I think by what you said Bully Hayes that you have some strategies different from the guide. I think for that kind of situation, the guide is a good way to make you think of other strategies, and the catalog of the different ships and items you can buy are really handy. While there are the occasional thing in the guide that you think are weird or don't care about, if you read some of the little side things, you can pick up nice little tips to help you along with the game. Also, lets say you can't get on the computer, due to your eyes are too bloodshot or something, this guide is a nice little apetizer to wait until you recover your eyes to go on.

Point well taken, Python, but I remember some of the things being wrong, not just different ideas. It's been awhile since I read it, so I can't give you examples, sorry. I did pick up a few tips while reading it, though, things I didn't notice before, like getting the "Big woo" from your wife gives you a map piece everytime. I guess I was looking at it as much as from a writer's POV as a player's.

I haven't even read the manual yet (except for the `ship-list` spreadsheet), so why would I read a guide? Rather be playing the game to be honest.

In my opinion some of these guides (prima , etc..) can be a help for someone. For someone else they are a loss of money and not better as some sheets of toilet paper. I own some prima strategy guides but I know most of them. Some are well made, some are worse. The bad ones I selled used at Ebay. In fact I need this guides only a few times or when I wanna help someone in a (roleplaying) community and don´t find the right words.

For myself it depends on the Game whether I read a manual / strategy guide or not. Mostly I play the games autodidactial without reading anything.

I got Offcial Guide.
But I have to say A free online <a href="http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/sm_pirates.txt" target="_blank">FAQ/Strategy Guide</a> is better more than that paid one.

Here's an updated link to that FAQ, that link won't work, Mike...

Couple of good articles there, thanks for the head's up! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

No, your link goes directly to the .txt file but GameFAQs does not allow it to be shown that way (try clicking on your link, you'll see), you have to link to it from the html page. If you click on my link, it'll show the page where you then have to click on a link to see the .txt page. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
