Has any of you ever seen "The son of monte christo"? because i have, and it certainly dosent look like a pirate movie to me, no merchantmen, no navy, no pirate ships, no sea even. and not a single time is "Pirate" mentioned.

I agree with you. However, it is one of the films on my 3 great pirate movies collection. DVD called "Legendary Pirate Movies." Watched it and I think it is more "Swashbuckler" than pirate.

Another movie considered a pirate movie is "A High Wind in Jamaica" starring James Coburn and Anthony Quinn.

The Goonies: Not really a pirate movie, but it certainly revolves around the subject.

Different opinions are going to abound on this issue. It has been my experience that a number of movies are categorized as "Pirate Movies", but really do not fit the true pirate mold. But since you are updating the list I would think what you want to list is up to you. When individuals review the list they can decide for themselves what is/is not a pirate movie. Personally, I have a number of movies considered to be "Pirate Movies", but have not listed them here. In my opinion, they could fit/or not fit. That's my 2 cents.

Alright, I leave the swashbuckler films, I think it have the spirit of piracy.

And to add to the list, a very good movie with Mr R. Newton : Blackbeard the pirate

Count of Monte Cristo, there are pirates in that, sword fighting, ships. Pretty piraty.

wat about documentries... or books? A nice list of pirate books and other stuff... haha

<strike>- Treasure Planet</strike> Edit: Whoops! Already mentioned!
- The Crimson Permanent Assurance (Monty Python Feature)
- The Spanish Main
- The Black Pirate (Silent Movie)
- The Black Swan
- Against All Flags
- Anne Of The Indies
- Blackbeard's Ghost
- Peter Pan
- Hook
- The Pirate Movie
- The Muppets Treasure Island
- Die Schatzinsel / L'ile Au Trésore (1966)
- Captain Ron
- Pirates! (w Walter Matthau, 1986)

"Captain Horatio Hornblower" (1951) with Gregory Peck.

Not really a Pirate Movie (much more a Royal Navy movie) but a real good movie with excellent swordfighting action and sea battles in the napoleonic era. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Jack Black, I love that movie! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> "He knew me name!" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Maybe, Captain Dams, you could expand your idea to "movies that pirate-minded folks might enjoy", rather than compiling a list of "piracy exclusive" movies. There are a lot of swashbuckling films out there, even "Hamlet" has pirates in it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" /> <u>The Princess Bride</u> comes to mind.

This is a TV movie adaptation of <u>The Scarlet Pimpernel</u>, that I remember enjoying. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" /> (Didn't we used to have a smiley that was eating popcorn? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> )

<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084637/" target="_blank">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084637/</a>

I like this adaptation because this is one of the few screenplays that, in my opinion, is better than the book. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Ahoy, Capn Enigma!

Aye! Captain Horatio Hornblower is a great movie.

SCM "movies that pirate-minded folks might enjoy" sounds like a great idea. I remember enjoying The Three Musketeers even if there're no pirate in it.

Here are some more folks might enjoy.

Beneath the 12 Mile Reef
Wallaby Jim of the Islands
Jamaica Inn
Sea Wolf - The Pirates Curse
Mutiny on the Bounty
Captain Courageous
Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (TV Serial Classis now on DVD)
Phantom Ship (1935 Cult Classic)

I didn't find the adventures of Robinson Crusoe (TV serial) on imdb.

But I add to the list Master and Commander.

The Robinson Crusoe adventures (14 adventures) are part of a TV serial Classics collection that includes The Adventures of Long John Silver (13 adventures) . It is a four DVD set. Most of the episodes are in B&W, but a few are in color. Published by Platinum Disc Corporation. All have been digitally mastered.
