Pirate Film Music

Remember the opening scene in DMC? Beckett's troops rowing ashore, the mother pulling her child inside, the door shuts and Beckett rides down the length of his troops... that music was amazing, shame it wasn't in the soundtrack. We should use that, but later on when the EIC becomes something horrible. It would be like the scene in Star Wars III: when the two fighters are cruising over the star destroyer, then shows Vader in his black suit slowly walking down the bridge towards the Emperor and the unfinished death star outside. It is the transformation to the dark and horrible Empire that we know from the original trilogy.

Another good piece of music is the Master and Commander theme. If you have the soundtrack, its the really energetic part in the first track. We could use a similar theme for Edwards.

Yeah, i love that theme from DMC!! That was very good, i like the idea of using just music to drown out the sound of battle, and everything is dramatic. That is a good type of drama. Something like that can be used for when the EITC becomes more evil, or we find out how evil. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

Perhaps we should use it in a scene like so:

DMC......................................................................HTC
Lord Beckett and troops rowing ashore...............An anchor being drawn up out of the water, sails being set.

Troops marching through streets of Port Royal....Seamen running about as camera pulls in on Beckett on quarterdeck.

Woman pulling child indoors..............................EIC flag being hoisted up flagmast.

Lord Beckett riding down the ranks....................Camera pulling out quickly and panning along a huge line of EIC ships leaving a harbor.

Beckett's boots behind Elizabeth........................EIC admiral giving orders and putting a glass to his eye.

Blacksmith shop broken into and chains shown...Continues the EIC fleet scene, continues to pull out and pan more, revealing that the fleet is even larger.
Shot ends as a whisp of clouds covers camera.

Love it!!!!!!!! Perfect. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES ON MY LARGE FLEET SCENES. We must add these to the script!!

Large? Yes.
Epic? No, save it for AWE.

I mean, what we saw in AWE was a friggin <i>armada</i>!

But yeah... the East India Company has gone bad... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

You know this is kind of random, but I would like to have another organ scene of Jones. What say you? Human form of course.

Another organ scene would be interesting; could be put in the Jack-Davy encounter. Where would that scene the Commodore proposes above go into the script? Before the big battle at the end of the film?
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Large? Yes.
Epic? No, save it for AWE.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Agreed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

The scene that the Commodore proposed will go after they attack Batavia, and the Dutch retaliate by counter-attacking with a larger force, and push the EITC out. Beckett is angry so he readies his fleet and sets sail.

Commodore, i change my words on what i said about your idea, ITS BRILLIANT!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> I can see that song being played, and do you know the end of it how it sounds like wind howling? Thats when the camera pans up into the clouds on a cloudy day. Like the Black Pearl in COBP at Isla de Muerte. That is also another good piece.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Large? Yes.
Epic? No, save it for AWE.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I think this will be epic in a different way. In a more realistic way. What you should say is:

Non-fantasy epic? Yes!
Fantasy epic? Save it for AWE.

We need to start tying in certain themes here that we can give little names to. Like "Jacks Theme" and a variation of it like "Comical" or "Serious" or "Heroic". We also should discuss what we think of Hans Zimmer and what we should want him to compose. A guideline if you will. So they will have a certain music set to write to when producing the film. This is meant to be different from the other thread. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Just thought I'd bring this thread back as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

My opinion on Hans Zimmer I have already written down earlier in this thread. I must say I am becoming less and less enchancted with his work. I find it altogether too modern, especially for a pirate film. I much prefer purely orchestral music. Hans Zimmer has written some nice stuff for the PotC films, but also some really horrid stuff. His work is of tremendously varying quality.

His Gladiator was amazing! I love that theme, and I still stand behind my words, that yes he has slacked off a little, but if we provide some sort of guidelines then we can have the good old orchestral pirate music. That is why it is imperative we do...

He CAN do it; I am certain of that. It seems to me like he just, for whatever reason, doesn't. Which makes him a very frustrating composer for me. His music has the makings of greatness, but it isn't great. Which proves to me that he COULD write something great if he would only try hard enough. This is for me more frustrating than in the case of a composer who just <i>can't</i> write something great. Of course the fact that Hans Zimmer has some sort of recording method which makes real orchestra sound like it was generated in a computer doesn't really help either. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

I have updated my folder of pirate film and game music on the FTP. Here's the complete list of what's there, including notes on what's new.

I hope you people find the above useful. If you know of any other pirate film music or something like that which I haven't posted above, please let me know! :woot

Ah! Forgot to upload that one; do have it though. Indeed does work with it. Also forgot to upload 1492: Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis.
That one's quite inappropriate, even more so than the modern styled PotC film music, but makes for some good listening anyway.
