Original Priates, For FREE!

Slick

Landlubber
That's right, the original version has become abandonware. Meaning, the developers and whatnot decided to stop `mass-producing` it (probably years ago) and it is now available for free to the general public. This is completely free, and legal.

NOTE: this is a dos game, if you need help installing it, don't hear anything, or whatever, consult the site's FAQ's or Forums.

Just because it's on that website doesn't mean that it's legal!

The publishing rights still belong to someone, hence the reason it was included in the limited edition of the new Pirates.
If it was legally free, then what would be the incentive or reason to include it in the limited edition in order to promote sales?
I'm with Fred Bob on this, this is illegal and posts like this shouldn't be made.

one more thing, technically - It's not warez or illegal.

Sure, the companies still own them and whatnot but the games are no longer in `mass-production`. Meaning, the devs/publishers are receiving $0 from the game, and the only place you can get your hands on games like this is from sites like this. Sure, they make include them in a special package or whatever but it's not at any extra cost (if it is, you were ripped off and you suck) and it was onlty included as a marketing ploy.

So, they company loses no money and has no reason to be angered by you download the original pirates. If anything, they'd be happy the game is still failry popular.

Aw, give it up, Slick! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Actually Slick, intellectual property rights are the same whether said property is out of print or not. So just becuase Firaxis is not pulling a profit from the original, does not mean it's free for the taking.

But, it's still a great game and worth the time getting an old copy (like the original Pirates! and Pirates! GOLD I have on my machine) to actually work. I actually keep and old 486 machine running to play some of the old classic DOS games with. Good stuff!

It's true in some cases, namely for old nintendo games and from dos where the company actually no longer exists, and no one owns the game, that's when it becomes abandon ware, but pirates is not.

I'd think that even those companies that no longer exist, having been bankrupted or for some other reason, would have sold the rights that they own to _someone_. Even if it was for one dollar. Their debtors would have insisted on it.

It might be hard to track down those owners, however...

And it is besides the current topic. Pirates is not, nor has it ever been, abandonware. Claiming it as such would also make it legal for someone to break into my apartment and steal some of my intellectual property on the basis that they cannot get it anywhere else and that I'm not making any profit from it anyway...

Actually I think you'll find that Firaxis & Co. are making a profit from the original, because (as I have said before in this thread although I guess some have missed it) it's included in the Limited Edition, i.e. as one of the reason to buy the Limited Edition, which sells at a higher price than the normal edition.

Oh Hang on, I know.. Firaxis downloaded it from that site and burnt on the Limited Edition DVD/CD because they had some room left... Yeah right <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actually, on this side of the pond, the limited edition and the standard edition were the exact same price. The limited edition was only available during preorder and is now not on the shelves at all save for a stocking anomoly or something.

Be realistic here, there's no such thing as abandonware. There is freeware, shareware, giftware etc, but not abandonware. It's only a `made-up` term by software pirates (not the good kind of pirates) to justify spreading of warez.

Yep,ye can call it what ye want mates, but like Fred Bob said, all such links will be deleted by Admin. an Moderators <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I don't understand the point of your post Toast (hey that rymes). Are you trying to say that you don't look beyond your own borders?
Seriously mate I do know what you mean, I think. You thought the LE was the same price as the standard edition in every country?

Hengist, my only point was that the price was the same for both editions over here in the US. Frankly, I had no idea that anybody else was paying more for the LE.

Don't think it has anything to do with not looking past my own borders. Actually, I do a pretty good job of that. I leave in 2 weeks for Rome and it will be my third trip to Europe in the last 18 months. Should be in London/Manchester in the fall.

Not an ignorance thing, just an "wasn't paying attention to the release info for Europe" thing. Come to think of it, with the `T-shirt` you guys got over there, I guess it's a no brainer that it costed more.

I still agree with everyone that it's not abandonware.

Thats great ye get the chance te travel Cap'n Toast, is it job related ur do jest like te take a lot O' holidays <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well skull, I used to live in germany when I was first in college and then after I joined the US Army. And I was an Army brat growing up, so we lived in many places. It's kinda in my blood I guess.

But in the last few years, I've gotten the itch to travel a bunch so I've been on more holidays than I can afford. Last summer I was Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of `D-Day`. Met quite a few American, British and Canadian veterans while I was there. Heroes All!

But yes, just lots of vacations. More than I should... I just can't seem to stop <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Um, the "good" kind of pirates eh? Maybe you should do a little historical research, Cpt. StarEye <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

I assume by "good" pirates, he was referring to one like your avatar. The romantic notion of pirates that we all know and love. Not the lawless rogues that I'm sure we're all aware were more typical.

Not that there is anything wrong with lawless rogues mind you, just less likely to be invited dinner guests. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
