On this day, April 28'th 1655, British Admiral Robert Blake attacked and destroyed a pirate fleet and the fort batteries of the Barbary pirate strong hold of Porto Farina, Tunisia. Blake was sent to extract “compensation” from the pirate states that had been attacking Enlgish shipping in the Mediterainin. The Bey of Tunis was the only leader of the pirate states to refuse Blakes demands. Blake attacked with 15 ships of his own, his fleet destroyed nine Algerian ships, and also destroyed two shore batteries. It was the first time shore batteries had been taken without landing troops.
Blake had quite an extensive career and is considered by many to be the architect of British naval power. He served during a time of great turmoil, during which England would fight many conflicts with her neighbors, and even with herself in the English Civil War! Blake literally wrote the book on sailing and fighting instructions. In 1653. In that classic manuscript, Blake wrote down the definitive tactics of single line formation combat.
