OH HELP ME!!!! HELP ME!

Captain-Gwynn

Landlubber
I was playing POTC on an old desktop with Win98, but now I have a new desktop (IBM ThankCentre) with Win XP Pro.

With the game goes to load a new game the screen goes back to the desktop and the game shuts down. Any advise would be great... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> I have an unmoded game.

I have the following: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
Pentium 4 3.00GHz
512 MB RAM
Vidio card is ( Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset ) not sure what that all is, but I can run Silent Hunter III from UBI, which not a lot of cards will run. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Thanks for all who can help me back into the game.

The fact that you're running Silent Hunter 3 gives a possible clue. SH3 uses Starforce copy protection. While Starforce *may* not be as bad as it's been made out to be, it's also very likely that it's not as benign as the Starforce people would like you to think.

Try removing the Starforce drivers. The "official" removal utility is at:

<a href="http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55" target="_blank">http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55</a>

Don't worry, this will not affect running SH3. Starforce will be reinstalled the first time you run the game again. Necesitating running the Starforce removal utility every time you want to run PotC.

Give it a try and see if it allows you to run PotC afterwards, and let us know if it helped.

Thanks for that tip, but after removing Starforce, it still clicks out to the main desktop each time I try to load New Game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Captain-Gwynn

Sorry I can't be of any help.

Just wanted to say it's good to see ya back here ...

although not under your circumstances.

Thanks Petros, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

As always its a pleasure to talk to you.

I will hopefully get it all fixed as I have downloaded Build13 and would love to play again.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> see you and the old gang in the forum..... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Cap'n Gwynn, good to see yer sail'n these waters again, you can grab the 1.4B no DVD patch for SH3 to bypass starforce. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Skull: That's the best way. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You know you're hardcore if you use a sliderule instead of the TDC to calculate firing solutions! hehe

Gwynn: Try turning on error logging and see what kind of errors it produces. Look in engine.ini and change two lines:

tracefilesoff = 0
runtimelog = 1

This will produce a few *.log files each time you (try to) run the game. The contents should tell us why the game isn't working.

Thats on onboard video chipset, in other words you don't have a video CARD installed, check your motherboard manual to see if it supports T&L { Texture and Lighting} if it does not you will not be able to play POTC, T&L is required support for graphic cards, chipsets. You may be required to purchase AGP or SLI PCI Express video card, depending on what motherBoard you have . I would recommend to do this to get maximum performance and graphics from yer nice new rig <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Arghh! Skull beat me to the diagnosis. You need a new graphics card. Check out what type of video ports you have available and we could make some recommendations. POTC is very picky about graphics cards, even ones that are far more powerful than necessary don't always work with the program. I recommend an Nvidia card at 6200 or higher. Lower one will run, but it is kinda touch and go. POTC seems to run best with Nvidia. ATI and SIS cards tend to have problems, especially SIS. Onboard cards almost always have problems. Hope this helps and good to see you in these waters again! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I have a PCI riser card that a video card could be added, but not sure what card will fit it? I will have to go looking for one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

if its PCI express slot any PCI card will fit, if you have AGP slot same, just be sure you know what type your motherboard supports. Here is a link to EMEA No DVD patch version 1.4B, if you have any questions about SH3 see my thread SH3 in Alternative Games, RLB or myself can help you, Good Hunting <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I HAVE THE GAME PLAYING!!!!!!!!!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

I just need to install build13 now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

The Pirates Guild will be back at sea very soon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

and another pirate sails the sea's again! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> what's your first target?

Welcome back, Cap'n Gwynn. nice to see your sailing the Caribbean again in that monsterous MOW of yours <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />

BTW, whatever happened to that model ship you were making? [wooden one, if anyone's confused. i dont remember Gwynn even planning to make a PotC Ship].

Congratulations! I hope you'll enjoy PotC again! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

ah yes, monstrous is definatly my style as well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Yes Bigger is better, as any girl will tell you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> I have loaded Build13, now just to see what it all does, and get my Man-o-War back..... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

try sailing in 3D sailing mode to another island. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> it's quite a bit of fun. you should customize your own settings in the buildettings and internalsettings files. otherwise you will have to start a new game when you've made some progress to change something that you don't like. every time that you make a change in one of these two files you have to start a new game for the changes to take effect.

i would recommend the ketch or the lugger VML as a starting ship. the ketch for its speed, and the lugger VML because it looks so good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

fancy some fighting and special effects? go to the maltese abbey in greenford. the town has been extended now and an apothecary has been added as well. one warning though: come prepared! you will need the toughness ability.

you will notice that anyone that you kill will remain lying there. press 'T' to loot the corpse and make it go away. this can be changed in the buildsettings. as long as it lies there, it will be an impassible obstacle.

for anything else, you know where to go!

I was last playing build11 with a Man-O-War as seen in my sig, but now using Build13, how do I get my ship and money back.... or do I start over?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Captain-Gwynn

So many changes have been made in game functions, that even saves from Build 12 won't work.
You will have to start a new game.
