No Gore!? Why not the favored "Minor Menu"?

Krehlmar

Landlubber
Ok seriusly... Ive seen gore since I was 3 years old, never did me no harm!
Why can we have atleast blood and such, and why not have an option for minors... like Halflife and all other gory games, were if you put on the menu you cant see blood nor gore...

Is it because 11 000 people are shoot dead each year in USA That you people blame games for its happenings?... Because I never got why everyone grown up is so offended by gore and such..

I think its unfair if we dont have an option to get blood if we want...

its more fun and realistic, gets a more chaotic and carnadge feel when fighting...
its kinda feels unreal if 8 ships clash togheter, and not a single red spot on the screen occurs, just people going "WhooOP! I fell into water!"...

No gore? Well, it ain’t no secret that violence sells everywhere. On TV, in games - everywhere.
Truth be told, I get sick of getting up in the morning and turning on the TV just to hear who has been murdered or killed.
If I know Sid and the team at Firaxis that well, it will be no lie for me to tell you that they are very antiviolence. And why wouldn’t they be? It is everywhere else. The last thing they needed was to include violence in their greatest games.

Usually it is not hard to find gore and stuff like that, so why search for it in Pirates!? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Pirates! takes you away from reality, which can sometimes be disgustingly tiring.

When you hear someone have died on the new, you aint laughing...
When you however maybe blow someone/something to smitteries, you laugh as a evil overlord.

See, why would you make a game about the most ferocios bandits of that time, but not have blood?

I can understand if you do not like gore, but for those who like, should they suffer?

It would just feel so much more cooler if you shoot a cannonball and someones limb flew by, or atleast some minor blood... I can agree, gibs might not be realistic for pirates, but atleast some blood...

Oh yeah, and when someone die on a ship fight or anywere else... I dont remember what I read, but do they just fall into water, or do they lie on the deck?

Well the overall graphical style might have something to do with it - its quite cartoon like, and i think its the light side of being a pirate that they want to capture in the new Pirates!

You could always check out Seadogs2(Corairs II) for a more gritty pirate game?

I'll be getting both i think - to slate my pirate hunger <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I don't think gore would fit into the graphical style of Pirates! 2 very well.

As for violence in the media being related to violence in real life, `puh-leaze`. I grew up watching Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner, and I have yet to throw anyone off a cliff.

This game is to be a family affair, something Dad & the Kids can play together. Pure fun & adventure, Indiana `Jones-style`.
I think it takes a lot more effort and creativity to design a title like this will be than to use shock value as a selling factor. With that said, I'm all for violent games & gore. Scorpion's fatality moves in Mortal Kombat will always hold a dear spot in my heart. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> I just don't think Pirates! warrants it. Besides, an accurate "gore" slider in the options for a 17th century game would not only turn on blood, but smallpox, vd, dysentery, malaria and the bloody flux! Ooo and don't forget scurvy. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I guess you never played the original Pirates, which became a legendary ground breaking success that managed to depict pirate life without flying body parts.

Well, the only thing I can say is that it's a Sid Meier game, and anyone who has played any SM game knows that gratuitous gore has never been part of his design philosophy, and based on his track record he doesn't seem to need it to sell games. You may have to wait to see if the mod community can gore up the game for you I guess.

I don't mind the lack of gore but I think when you board a ship crew members that are beaten should die with at least a little bit of blood. Sure, some can get knocked over but the lack of death seems rather....dull.

Nah, trust me, even though there is lack of death, it will not be dull. A fun experience easily rolls over the death issue.

The closest you can come to people dying in the game is land battles. There you clearly see people falling.

(This is such a `non-important` subject we are talking about when we have other aspects of the game we want cleared up.)

I'm not saying the game is going to be dull because the lack of death (Hell, Sid Meier's is working on this game) just the aspect of boarding other ships is going to be a bit odd if no one dies.

yeah... I mean, THeres nothing I hate more than movies and such when just 1 side dies, or noone dies (I HATE HERCULES/XENA).. I mean...
Would it seem even piraty if not even 1 person out of 8 boats lie down and die....

I don't mind the lack of gore. I'm not squeamish at all, but I won't miss gore in this game. I loved the style of the original game and I am glad they are keeping the "Errol Flynn" swashbuckler feel and not buckling to the more violent tendencies of today's games.

Aren't there enough bloody games already???If i see what my stephchildren play i want take them all and throw the games out of the window.Games like `dragonball-z` advertising violence, and that is not a good thing.Nice to see now `adventure-rpg` game, where it's not the purpose to blow someone brains out. It's a know fact that violence games and `movies-tv`-programmes make children more violent. So please let us go back to nice fun games.

Well Sonicsfan, people will always disagree about whether or not media influences make kids more violent. I tend to think that they certainly have an impact though it's almost impossible to tell how much. But, I'm with you - glad to see a family game instead of Doom III or the like.

it won't be blood and guts but stamina and health indicators and that's ok with me. what bothers me is the word cartoon and all its derivatives (cartoonish, cartoonlike, cartoonesque) are popping up far too often. i don't want a Disney movie! you know the old saying <i>if it walks like a cartoon, and quacks like a cartoon, it must be a cartoon</i>! (ug...)

It should be noted that now days the majority of gamers are over twenty years old. So most games should be made with them in mind. If parents don't like the content of a game, they can simply not let their children play it. If their kids don't listen and play anyway, it's not my fault they can't control their kids. My choice of games and gameplay should not be limited because of someone else's problems. As was already mentioned, even a content toggle like some games have is a good option. It's not the games that cause problems. There was already something wrong with the child that causes them to do bad things. Take the Grand Theft Auto 3 case as an example. Two kids decide to get some rifles and take potshots at cars driving by. They end up killing one person and wounding another. After they were arrested they said they did it because of GTA3. They just wanted to damage cars and didn't mean to hurt anyone. Did they say that in an effort to avoid blame as most kids try to do? Did their lawyers suggest it hoping to sue the game company for a ton of cash? Holding the game company responsible is ludicrious. It's the kids and their parents that are to blame. The first question is why do they have unsupervised access to rifles in the first place. Second, don't you think any normal kid would realize that shooting at cars driving down the road is a stupid and dangerous idea. I know I had more sense than that when I was young. I'm not saying that games, movies, etc have no effect on children, but I think what ever small effect there is can be easily countered by their upbringing. By the same token a child with problems is going to cause problems with or without the influence of a game. Blaming a video game is simply another way to shift the blame off the child and their parents. In today's world it seems no one is responsible for their own actions anymore. It's always a video game, an abusive parent, or some other bad life experience. It's time people stop trying to shift blame and take responsibility for their own mistakes again. Everyone has trouble in life. That's life. Deal with it!

ddmagnan...

As I said before, we can debate for hours on whether or not violence begets violence. I am in favor of personal responsibility in the end. But, I am also in favor of decency.

I don't know about the majority of gamers being over 20. I don't have the demographic statistics to either agree or disagree.

I did not play GTA3 due to it's content. If Pirates! decided to go for more adult content, I would probably not play it either. It is my choice in the end. And I will choose to play Pirates! due to it's family oriented theming of what could considered a rather nasty subject. If they decided to put rape and murder in the game, I'd probably pass on it, even if it had a filter. I just choose to not support that style of computer entertainment.

In the end, Sid does not make games like that. The original game was not like that. Civilization was not either (two of the best computer games ever written - not my opinion alone) and the new Pirates! won't be either.

I'm on the edge of my seat to play this game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

there are as many venues where one can argue <i>who's to blame</i> as there are things to blame so why don't those wishing to discuss the Columbine Syndrome head on out to one of those and not start a rash of unqualified opinions on what causes kids to be more moronic than usual.

agreed - point taken, shutting up now <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I also didn't mean to start a debate. It's just a subject I am passionate about. I'm very interested in the gaming industry and have read many studies over the years. If you are interested Cap'n Toast, here is a link that I could find quickly.

Sample:

These figures are from a survey by the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) in 2000.

§ Of the frequent users who play computer games, 28 percent are under eighteen years old, 30 percent are between 18 and 35 years old and 42 percent are over 35 years old. Of the frequent users who play on video game consoles, 42 percent are under eighteen years old, 37 percent are between 18 and 35 years old and 21 percent are over 35 years old.

I think many people are unaware how many of my generation that grew up playing video games have continued to do so as adults. It has gotten so bad that TV execs are concerned about the loss of viewers.

I'm now done hijacking the thread. My apoligies.

Back on topic. I have no problem with Pirates! not having gore. If that is the style in which the game was designed, then that's fine. Blood and gore simply for their own sake do not make the game better. If the game is meant to realistically portray violence then it fits. In the case of Pirates! it is not needed as the game has a `light-hearted` style.
