That was a fascinating read! For the entire crew to escape unscathed and save most of the rigging is remarkable.

I loved the quote about the "rigging failure". "Out-Britished" indeed; I don't think I could have understated it better myself.

I have to give that a read. I was sailing as a trainee aboard the Dutch ship Thalassa during that same race. The weather was bad enough that our captain decided to withdraw and stop at Brest (there was no immediate danger but there were only six crew aboard and 30 trainees and I guess that's why he chose not to risk it). We learnt about the Baltimore there but didn't know the full extent of it until we reached Santander.
