Laptop: scary sounds while charging

My good 'ol laptop has started making scary ticking sounds while charging.
But ONLY while charging while ON. HUH???

Anyone has a clue what might be wrong here?
Any simple(!) things I could try to fix?

Note: Keep in mind I am NOT an IT guru.
Far from it.
I'm a sailor stuck ashore... :(

Has it got an SSD or a hard drive?
Also could it be the cooling fan?

I've heard/seen people who have newer laptops (so this could be TOTALLY wrong) with charging issues, they can make ticking sounds.
From what I know, turning it on could be putting a short on it, and the possible reason that it does that only when on may be that the laptop is trying to take power directly from the charger.
Though if it does actually charge while on, and it doesn't just use the battery my theory could be negated.
Does the battery happen to be removeable? If yes try turning it on while using the charger without the battery.
Once again; could be totally wrong.

SSD nowadays.

Maybe it could be a fan?
Though it don't sound much like one...

Thing is over 10 years old...
But I don't really want to get a new one.
It still suits me just fine...

Apart from the x-key, that is...

Maaaaybe...?

Would be my first guess at least, I have had quite a few laptops over the years whose cooling fans started making weird noises. You could try stress testing the laptop with an application and listening to the cooling fan under pressure.

It seems related to the sound card/sound board.

Ticking is also there when not charging; but it's worse with the charging.
It's very periodic. Like a clockwork.

The performance of some of the sound systems occasionally messes up too.
Like some crossed/loose wires?
Or could it be an erroneous driver update?

Who knows...
Either way, I fear I'm going to need new hardware.

Bugger.
Like I've got nuttink better to spend my efforts on. :(

It MUST be with the soundcard indeed.
When I put in earplugs, it actually seems normal... ish.
Again.

Perhaps this laptop has some life in it yet.

Ah yes speaker problems; Can go from making sounds when they're not supposed to, to not making sounds at all.
My laptop falling in the latter one of the two :rofl.
Sound chip overheats when having to power them, and thus they just cut. Used to last longer, but now it barely lasts two minutes.
