<b>Screen: Black screen (when starting the program) </b>

Disable 3rd party applications running in the background
Background applications can be either closed temporarily or disabled. If they are temporarily closed, they will start again when the computer is restarted. If they are disabled they will need to be manually `re-enabled` to run them again.

To temporarily close any extra applications and services running in the background in Windows XP:
Hold down the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
This will bring up the Task Manager. If it brings up Windows Security, click the Task Manager button.
Click the Applications tab. This will list programs currently running on your system
Hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and click each program to highlight it.
When all the programs are highlighted, hit the End Task button. If you get any messages that state the program is not responding, hit End Task again.
Now click the Processes tab. Click the bar that says User Name to sort the list.
Click on any of the processes except EXPLORER and TASKMGR that have your login name in the User Name column. Then click End Process. Click Yes on the Task Manager Warning. Repeat this step to remove all processes that are under your login name except EXPLORER and TASKMGR.
This should temporarily close any conflicting background applications. These applications will start up again when you reboot.

To prevent extra applications and services from loading during startup in Windows XP:
Click Start then Run
In the box type MSCONFIG and click OK. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility.
Click the Startup tab. This displays a list of all `non-vital` applications and processes that are loaded during startup.
Click the Disable All button to uncheck these items.
Click OK. When you are prompted to restart, click Yes
Upon reboot, these applications will not start. Try the game with these disabled. If it works, then one of these programs may be conflicting. Open MSCONFIG using the process above and recheck these programs using the process of elimination to determine the conflicting program.

To undo the above changes:
Click Start then Run
In the box type MSCONFIG and click OK. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility.
On the General tab, click the dot next to Normal Startup
Click OK. When you are prompted to restart, click Yes
This will restart your computer with all the background applications `re-enabled`.

<b>Error: Disc Read Errors</b>

This can occur if the CD has become dirty or damaged.
Clean the CD
Take a look at the under side of the CD and inspect for any fingerprints, dust, etc. If the CD does look dirty try cleaning via one of the following:
Use a CD cleaning kit (available at most computer stores)
Wash it with lukewarm water and mild dish soap solution. Rinse it completely, and then dry it with a soft cotton cloth (or anything that won't scratch the CD or leave debris). Once the CD is dry, try the game again.
Notice: If you do this, Make sure that you do not scratch the CD or put it into your system while still wet or damage may result.

<b>Error: "Wrong disc inserted. Please insert the original Pirates! disc into your CD/DVD drive." while starting the program

Manual misprint - Wrong disc declared as Play disc </b>

The game manual is incorrect; the Play Disc for the CD version of the game is actually Disc 2, and this is the disc you need in the drive to start the game. You may either Cancel this error, insert Disc 2, and start the game normally, or you may eject Disc 1, replace it with Disc 2, wait for it to spin up, and click the Retry button.

<b>Graphics: Cinematics are choppy or `out-of`-sync with an ATI Radeon video card</b>

Modify your systems graphics performance settings
Try setting the 3D slider in the Advanced section of your Display settings closer to Performance, and see if that improves the issue. You may need to contact your hardware manufacturer to properly locate this setting.

I hate these type of suggestions. Doing these things never resolves the problem. It's always a failure by the developer to account for the myriad of different video or sound cards out there. Still, we have to slog through this usage troubleshooting bs...

I think it's amazing that games work as well as they do given the bazillions of possible hardware/software combinations out there in PC land. Guess you could get a MAC - they seem to be more stable... but then, you can't play Pirates! on a MAC <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

I have a different problem. I can play for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then I get a blue screen telling me that my computer is dumping physical memory. This actually creates a file on my computer called blah blah blah.dmp. Not that specifically ... but close enough. I ave all the minimum requierments so this is very upsetting. Has anyone else seen this problem. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

Sounds like a power issue. Are you sure your power supply can run your hardware?

When I first start the game and select a new career I can only input a name but not select any skills or difficulty: If I then abandon the game and start a new one the option to select skills and sp on is there...

I also have the AA bug....movies flashing when using AA

Regarding the black screen, I personally found that disabling Plug and Play in System Services (MSCONFIG) seems to work, though at the terrible disadvantage of losing sound. Apparently, a conflict between my sound device and the game (though I could've sworn it wasn't plug and play.) Hopefully it'll be remedied with the first patch. Looks like a lot of bugs to work out.

My copy still doesn't work. I receive the message "original disk...". Firaxis sent me an email with a link to Securom and that DOESN'T work, to install a new exe file (which I'm not sure I'll be able to figure out). Anyways, has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be great.

I can get the game started fine. However, every few minutes while I'm playing, the game suddenly just vanishes and I have to restart it. Any idea what's causing this and how to fix it?

whenever i start the game the game crashes after a few secunds, I have tried running i safe mode but i doosent help. Iv also tried updating my video driver but i still have the problem. Any suggestions?

game runs slow after about 15 mins

Hey, cool game, but about `10-15` minuites into it, i'll be sailing around, go into a city and when i come out again the game is sudden;y running very slowly, and then from that point on any 3d bit is very jerky, the only soloution i've found is to save, quit and then reload, which solves the problem, but then 15 minuites later it does the same thing.

any ideas as to what may be casueing it.

I have 8X AA on, but my pc is well over the required spec

I just thought, instead of postoing without trying anything, i'll take off the AA see if it makes a differece.

about 15 mins in, it crashed to desktop.

this game is cool but it ain't half buggy

someone said earliar that the second time they created a character they could decide what skill they wanted, difficulty and how what time line to start in, so i thought id check my game and i got the same thing. i don't suppose there happens to be a rather hefty patch out?

crash in A tavern

WHEN YOU'RE INSIDE A TAVERN, SOMETIMES YOU CAN SPEAK WITH THE GUY SITTIN' IN A BACK ROOM (HE SELLS YOU PARTS OF MAPS, ETC.)

THE GAME CRASHES WITH A PROBABILITY OF `60-70`% WHEN YOU TRY TO GO SPEAK WITH HIM. I WONDER IF NOONE NOTICED THAT... FOR IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Hi there !

Greetings from Germany. I just bought Pirates and had no problems installing and starting the game. But just after naming my pirate and selecting which nation to sail for, the game aborts and only `new-starting` the pc helps. Don't know what to do, please HELP !

Hi everybody,

Hello from the Netherlands.

This is my problem, can anyone tell me why my logitech di Novo, mediapad doesn't work when I play the game. The numlock button does not work. This is very frustrating because I can never win a dancecontest with one of the gouvernors' girls.

Help

I'm experiencing the same problems with you guys. The game crashes after few minutes always. My computer meets the hardware requirements of the game, but its still really slow and graphics are f***** up.

I think that the developers just wanted to get the game out before christmas knowing the game not yet ready. I wonder what consumer protections official say about this...

Hi LJG !

Have exactly the same problem and sent a report to Atari - USA.
They told my to stick with european support for help. Didn't do so
until now. Could you get any help so far?

Uwe

I have a low spec system ( AMD 2000+ ) and everything runs fine. No problem except what I suppose is a feature. European version (in french)

At least a game in a 1.0.0.0 version that isn't unplayable <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> Ive searched in a lot of discussion board and no one know want to do for all this problems. Either Atari or ATI seems to report a problem and make me think that they wanted to work on it.

My problem is that when I came in close combat sword and use a shot gun the game freeze (60% - 70% of the time) in a black screen and the only things who work is a hard reboot of my computer <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

For now I think I have been scammed <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Good uck everybody and Happy New Year

Hi All.

We have a network here and have played Pirates! on machines with different specs. The odd thing we have noticed is that the newest ATI and NVidia drivers seem to cause problems. Reverting to older drivers (from last Summer) fixed many of the crash problems.

There seem to be two different kinds of crashes. One is when you're sailing, and that seems to involve a pixel shader problem with some drivers. The other crash problem occurs when you enter the pub or the market to sell goods, and that seems to be either a video or an audio driver problem that is different from the crashes that occur on the sea.

If you are having trouble playing sea battles due to hangs, check the box labeled "disable shaders" in the video setup. The oceans don't look so good, but the crashes stop.

I changed from onboard soundstorm to an Audigy 2zs soundcard because I thought the NVidia sound was a problem. However, this had no effect on the crashes.

This game needs serious patching. Let's hope they don't take too long to get the patch done.

Happy Holidays!
