HMS Nelson (120)

Landlubber
Storm Modder
I'm assuming this is the right place to put this.

3d Model of HMS <i>Nelson</i>, launched in 1815, 120 guns, belonging to the British Royal Navy. Hopefully at some point this'll make it into the Build Mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />. <i>Nelson</i> never actually saw action, which is a pity, she's a lovely vessel, so hopefully she'll see some virtual action when she is complete. One thing you don't see often is a ship with six bow chasers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Done in Cinema 4D.

<img src="http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/6133/nelson4yg5.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Last image shows the plans used for building her. I'm not too happy with the stern section, and the dent in the hull. Updates will be posted here.

very nice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

We have serious problems with porting ships made by our modelers from scratch into PotC; it's doable but difficult.

According to Akella model should be made in Maya (4.5 or 5.0) and then exported to *.gm format with custom plugin made by them. However, forcing that plugin to actually work is far from easy. We had one modder who achieved this, but as far as I'm concerned that I think he made it with some exceptional way we are unable to recreate with other models.

I never did this, but make sure that this program you're using (Cinema 4D) can export to some popular formats? To export it you could try to save in VRML 2.0 format (or was it VRML 1.0?!) and then convert it with <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/tools/tool.rar" target="_blank">Inez Dias' Tool</a>. However, even that method can be hard (it'll produce famous ligting bug for sure).

Anyway, model seems wonderfull and it's a "must have" addition for build, especially for storylines which action will take place in late XVIII and XIX century. I wish you luck with that enterprice and hope that this project will find its way to positive finish (as, unfortunately, there were some project like that which was abandoned/canceled/postponed for infinity due to problem with making a model working in game).

Pretty good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

What's the info on Cinema 4D. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Looks very nice! Good luck with her! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I recommend you try exporting her to PotC now in her unfinished state so that you can find out if the exporting process works. Otherwise you'd do a lot of hard work, only to find out you can't get her ingame. Wouldn't be the first time that happens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thank you pirate_kk and Pieter. I followed your directions both. Cinema 4D exports to both VRML 1 and VRML 2, so I tried both. The Tool only worked with VRML 2, and it looked fine in Cinema 4D, shown below. (I have improved the stern too by this time. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />)

<img src="http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/1738/vrml2formatrq8.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

However, when I loaded it in the Tool, it came out with strange squares, and from a distance you can see lots of dots which I suspect are the gunports hovering over her seemingly broken up hull.

<img src="http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/4008/firstlookoc8.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Nevertheless, I tried to export to .gm, and got this error message. I pressed continue, but nothing happened further.

<img src="http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/975/messagebx3.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I think I shall have to make the whole model one piece, as opposed to little pieces arranged together, but I do not have time now. I'll update when I try again. At least it gets into the Tool. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

@damski62, what info do you want? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

That looks really weird. In any case do select the "Ship/Item/Location" box. You might also want to experiment with the "Reverse normals", "Invert Texture" and "Swap Y<->Z" when importing and see if you can get it to look more normal that way. Also turn off "Show Skeleton"; that's for characters only. Possibly the white boxes are part of the skeleton it tries to show?

nice, but the arse looks a bit wierd. but that's the ship itself, not your model.

STERN! It's called a <i>stern</i>, dammit! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

i bloody well know that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> just felt like using a different word.

Hmmm...shooting somebody with your arse...now where have I heard that before? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

@Cpt. James: The ship looks great so far <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Sooo... what's the polycount? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />o)

About 93320 polygons. Fixed up the decks to be decks, as opposed to blocks. Detailing them with stairs, guns, etc, soon.

<img src="http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/135/nelson5sm4.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm getting closer, I made the ship all one piece, and set it to the settings you suggested. There's no more odd white boxes, but now all I have is something that looks roughly like the guns. Sorry about the double-post.

<img src="http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4231/closeyetfaruk4.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Error message when trying to save as .gm.

<img src="http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/789/toosmallorlargekc2.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Meanwhile, the decks grow in detail.

<img src="http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6046/nelson6pq9.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

That constant error message when trying to save in .gm format seriously scares me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Maybe try do this also with older Tool versions; they're available for example on PotC ftp in file /Pieter Assorted Files/+ Nathan Kell.zip.

Hi,
well....looking at that picture with the error box, at least TOOL imports it as a ship/item/location model.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->@damski62, what info do you want?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Where do you get Cinema 4D ......is it expensive or is it freeware

------

Never mind ..... found it, £600+ , not cheap but reasonable by todays standards.

I'll try that too, pirate_kk, thanks for your help so far. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />. However, I'm a little unsure of where you refer to, could you directly link to the page?

The stern section isn't done yet, but I've wanted to do the masts for a while to make her more ship-shape, so here she is with masts and spars. The bowpsrit looks at a quite shallow angle to me, compared to HMS <i>Victory</i>, but the schematics for HMS <i>Nelson</i> show it quite clearly at that angle. The sizes of masts and spars here are estimated lengths, based on photos of HMS <i>Victory</i>, and the real life spars I own for my wooden model of the <i>Victory</i>. I draw these vessels a lot, so I think I'm capable of estimating well, but if anything looks disproportionate, do tell. Also, I realise there is a lump in the hull structure in the first photo, which has since been fixed.

<img src="http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/5968/nelson9tv4.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/7121/nelson10vg0.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

This shows the spars connected to the yardarms visible on the <i>Victory</i>, which I would think would be extended for the studding sails, which I don't think I shall attempt to use for this model.
<img src="http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/4299/nelson8bo1.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

In case you doubt me, the model is shown alongside the plans, in which the angle of the bowsprit is the same for both.

and i still think that arse looks wierd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> maybe the angle of the bowsprit is right, but are you sure of the length?

Exactly which part of the... stern looks weird? Please note that if you refer to the hull shape, the picture is outdated because I fixed it afterwards. And no, I'm not sure of the length of any of it. There are no pictures of the fully rigged HMS <i>Nelson</i>, nor of any other ship in her class that I know of, but it looks alright to me, compared with the <i>Victory</i>.

And thanks, pirate_kk. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
