good old cutthroats

I'm going to be replaying the game soon. I never really got far on it the first time but now I'll use the patch. The 7th one. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yes the patch solve some things, but also added 1710 and 1715 as starting years. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Aye, I still play.

Oi be a consummate lurker from the old days o' the Eidos Forum. Not a 'contender' mind, oi lurked in the shadowy corners o' tha Silver Sloop tavern whilst proper pirates like Capn Coggy da Bastid, Black Susannah, Dave E. Jones, William Fly, Pike Masters and many another scurvy gen'lman (n'woman) o' fortune met ter discuss the proper way ta go about "drinkin an whorin"!

Oi too became a master o' the "no-reloads" method o play, and didn't cheat much... at all. Sadly those old reg'lars met their grizzly ends one by one, although oi hear ol Coggy lives to this day on a remote island on the west coast o' Africa. Some remnants o the old tavern tales can be found ere:

<a href="http://tortuga_cutthroats.tripod.com/silverslooptavern2.html" target="_blank">http://tortuga_cutthroats.tripod.com/silverslooptavern2.html</a> (oi recommend Black Susannah's illustrated log)

and some extracts from ol Coggy's logs can be found ere:

Oi ear tell that some people ave trouble with good ol Cutthroats on ye olde Windows XP. There be many a tall tale o' how to fix it, but pers'nally oi found that just settin the colour depth to 256 colours and leavin everythin else alone done the job. Setting compatibility to ye even older versions of Windows slows down the game loads fer some reason, so don't do that. Moind yew, oi get no sounds on me opening video and the voice loads (fer example "oi think they've recognised us!") slow things down a little.

Were it good ? Well, assumin' Patch 7 (nothin less will do), which game do oi still keep comin back to after nigh on 8 years o' virtual piratin ? Which game allows ya ta feel yer liven the loif o' a real pirate (includin the dull bits)? The truth ? They all be right ! Some o' it be terrible, some o' it be inspired. It were a flawed masterpiece, higher res' graphics and more ships would 'ave made it a winner..... if it had worked out o' tha box.
Oi wonder what happened to Rob Davies ? - he were a real helpful programmer who supported tha program loik a real trooper after it were released. Thanks to him thar used ta be some real helpful information on Cutthroats modding about tha place (otherwise thar be no more sloops'n yer own sailin' in da whole o' the Caribbean) but oi can't foind it fer now, not even me parchment copy.

Thar used ter be a tradition back in ye olde Silver Sloop, every new member 'ad ter buy a round o' rum. So, a round o' run fer yer all, ya scurvy dogs. And me great thanks to all o' you Poirates o' da Caribbean modders; oi've 'ad many a happy hour o' plunderin thanks to you, you may lay your affy davit to that !

Cap'n Monty, still not retired.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Cap'n and thanks for posting those links. Great to see that this game has not sunk into oblivion after all. I think you pegged it right when you termed it a <i>flawed masterpiece.</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Why thankee for those kind words Ol' Salt.

I thought of all sorts a' other things ta say about good ol Cutthroats today..... none of which I can remember now. All I will add is that Cutthroats remains the only game that remembered that pirates spent just as much time on land as on sea. Sid Meier's Pirates! gives a nod to this, but in a 'minigame' kind o' way, which aint good enough in my opinion, fun though it is.

Oi reckon the only other game that has a genuinely piratey flavour is Tropico 2, even if you can't actually go to sea with yer scurvy swabs.

Reckon I might give POTBS a go in June though...

Now oim off to see if Build 14 Alpha 7 has been fixed yet.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

dear captains, i agree with you, cutthroats is a very nice game to play, as on land so at sea. my only hope is that eidos will make revival of this game in 3d version, maybe adding some features <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> since there was so much fans and it is obviously raising of flag to pirate oriented games nowdays.

maybe we`ll meet in some tavern soon in potbs, until than wish you a good plunder <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
