Game freezes in ransack screen...

well... IF i use the option where you can talk to the prisoners to ransome them the game freezes when i make my final option in the dialogue (no matter what the outcome)

now i know the answer on how to avoid this is simple... dont press the cannons button and dont use the talk to prisoners option...

but i still want to know why this happens...

(im using the unpatched POTC (is there even a patch?) with build 13 full installed over... i run the runme.bat file and have changed some settings in the buildsettings.h file... but that shouldnt be the reason... could it be that i am using a savegame from before i changed the buildsettings.h file???)



other than these two (quite minor) bugs im loving the mod... great work guys!

ps. i did have another crash... it was a totally random ctd whilst sailing... dont know why, but its probarbly just general windows instability or something like that.
 
avoiding the crash is rather simple: when the hour changes, the game is a little unstable at first, and if you starting things at that moment the game will likely crash. like going to a different camera mode and turning the camera, or firing. anything that requires quite a bit of graphics. just wait a few seconds and you should be able to avoid it.

the problem with the cannons menu is for as far as i know not a non-stopping freeze. it just has to load an animation video. this can be solved by turning animations off in the options menu. i do think that the change only takes effect after you start a new game, like i have experienced.

Did you also get the update 2 installed?


I really wish we could have Build 13 with the final updates in one package.
 
you will have to re-configure the buildsettings after you install the update, due to new toggles for features that have been added.
 
is it absolutely vital to install update 2?

cos right now the game seems to work fine (at least the "talking to prisoners" part... havent dared try the cannon thing yet)

it might have been something as small as turning off and on the animations again... cos i get animations now... and no crashes (so far)

It improves game balance, fixes some bugs including locations on new islands, and enables the building set mod.

A new game is required.
If you don't install it now you can probably do the main story and stock quests.

Once you go to a new island or get treasure quests, you'll wish you had update 2, and then will have to start a new game anyway.
 
for how long? just wait and see. maybe as much as 15 minutes. obviously, you don't have to whatch all the time, just let your computer run for a while to see if the menu opens. (you don't really need the cannons menu actually. i rarely use it, and if i do, it turns out that the enemy ship has a different cannon caliber anyway.) try and see if the trade book screen freezes as well. that one has an animation too. does the cargo screen in the ransack menu freeze too?
 
both the trade book screen and the cargo screen have short freezes but only for a very few seconds (albeit the trade is longer than the cargo freeze), but i still have no animation there...
and animations are turned on, and ive started a new game WITH the update...

ok... so what videos are played when? cos so far the only ones ive ever seen (going through the video folder) are the oxbay invasion (called simply invasion) and the "enemy officer killed" (called Blaze_mutiny_dead)

the rest are complete news to me...
also... alot of them have no sound... should it be that way? might this be because i have windows media player 10 installed???
 
the animation videos in the menu's are not supposed to have any sound. they are used as a background. i don't think that when you are missing sound in the other clips it would be the fault of WMP 10, as i have that too and are not experiencing any problems with it.

try turning the animation videos off, starting a new game, board a ship, and try to open the cannons menu.

NOTE: this problem has some similarities with problems i had when i wanted to run a game with a too old video-card. your's might be the wrong type.
 
If you have a memory.mp file in your main PotC folder, remove it. That might increase performance quite a bit. IF you have that file, that is. yup had it... removed it now... ill try out the game and get back to you...

EDIT: tried it and it worked... cannon screen fully working now... HOWEVER... all the cannon sounds are extremely muffled now... can barely hear them... all the other sounds are normal tho...
 
really? i've had something like that because my sound-file-limit (or whatever it is) got overrun. then the game takes precautions to tone down the sound effects. with me, some of the graphical effects give out as well when it gets really bad. but i think that thas has more to do with my computer. it might be the case that you don't have a big enough sound card.
 
naah... it worked just fine the next time i played the game... had no problems since... must have been some glitch or something...
