Extreme newbie Questions

bumpkin

Master Mariner
Storm Modder
Hello all,

My wife gave me POTC as a Christmas present last year. I finally got a PC that will play the game. 3ghz P4 512M ram, ATI Radeon 9800SE 128M video card. Our old PC was a 233Mhz MMX system.

My only problem now is that I fear I have lost some of the documentation that came with the game, as I am cannot find a list of which buttons do what. Just after getting sword, telescope and gun there is a place to practice sword play. The talks about using the 'dodge' button but after pressing every key I could find any buttons that make the character move.

I dearly love sailing games and I have even spent a week sailing on the HMS Rose before she became a movie star in Master & Commander.

Is there a guide or someting to help me figure out how to play. I have been really looking forward to playing this game.

Thankyou in advance
your most humble obedient servant

Wow, got to sail on the Rose? That's wonderful, you must have enjoyed that a LOT! She is a beauty!

You'll enjoy your stay here, too... If you get stuck, make sure you come back and do a search for the answer - if you can't find it, just ask, we'll be happy to help!

And the Douwesen Waterfall spa, bar, and grill is fired up for the weekend party, so be sure to drop by - and don't mind the ninja shrimp, they're just guarding Skull's Snakebite (dangerous) rum supply. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

(don't worry, if you stick around here long enough, you'll get it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />)

Again, welcome aboard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

bumpkin,

Welcome to the site, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />: I can tell you now that you will lose nothing by losing the manual for the game, it caused those of us who have been playing with the game for a while more confusion than clarification. There are only two pages in the whole thing that are of any use at all and here they are:

<b>CONTROLS
Sailing (1st person)</b>
Left Mouse Button...Forward movement (camera)
Right Mouse Button...Backward movement (camera)
Mouse X Axis...Left/Right turn (camera)
Mouse Y Axis...View Up/Down (camera)
W...Raise Sails (they actually got this wrong in the manual)
S...Lower Sails
A...Left Rudder
D...Right Rudder
Ctrl (Hold/Release)...Zoom in/out with spyglass
- ...Zoom out on local map (The radar device, top right of screen)
+ ...Zoom in on local map (I thought this was "e" and "f"?)
Tab ...Switch from Third/First person view
R ...Increase game speed (4x)
Enter ...Open Quick Command Menu
Spacebar ....Fire cannons/Accept
F2 ...Open Character screen/Cancel
Esc ...Cancel/Main Menu

<b>Sailing (3rd Person)</b>
Mouse X Axis ...Left/Right Orbit (camera)
Mouse Y Axis ....View Up/Down (camera)
W ...Raise Sails (They got it wrong again!)
S ...Lower Sails
A ...Left Rudder
D ...Right Rudder
- ...Zoom out on local map (You can also do this with the Right mouse.)
+ ...Zoom in on local map (I'm pretty sure they got this backwards, but again you can do it easier with the left mouse key. It lets you zoom in on your ship which, if you have a cool looking ship you tend to do a lot, but I digress...)
Tab ...Switch from Third/First person view
R ...Increase game speed (4x)
Enter ...Open Quick Command Menu
Spacebar ....Fire cannons/Accept
F2 ...Open Character screen/Cancel
Esc ...Cancel/Main Menu

<b>Land (3rd Person) (Skull and Fred Bob gave you most of these already, but if you want to print this out for reference)</b>
Left Mouse Button...Forward movement (camera)
Right Mouse Button...Backward movement (camera)
Mouse X Axis...Left/Right turn (camera)
Mouse Y Axis...View Up/Down (camera)
Shift ... Run
Ctrl ...Block (when sword drawn)
Q ... Fire Pistol (when sword drawn)
Tab ...Switch from Third to First person view (good for eagle and butterfly watching)
E ...Draw/Sheath sword
Enter ...Open Quick Command Menu
Spacebar ...Activate/Accept/Attack (Sounds rather like something said by Julius Caesar?)
F2 ...Open Character screen/Cancel
F3 ...Engage Active Icon
Esc... Cancel/Main Menu

Like Skull said, you can change the buttons to suit you better, for instance I invariably change the "Spacebar ...Activate/Accept/Attack," to "x" because it is easier for me, but after you've played with it for a while you'll get it the way that suits you best.

I think you will really like the graphics in this game, especially the ships and the sailing, but if you look around the various forums you may see references to Build 11, which you can download from PA, and you will find that the modders who have been working on this game have improved upon the original many times over.

Why thank you, Lady Cat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
No need to thank me, I was just doing an imitation of you. (and imitation is considered to be the most sincere form of flattery. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> )

Also, I had the manual handy, still a little surprised by the number of misdirections it has in just these two pages! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

I ran outa toilet paper so I'd be use'n de manual,it finaly served a purpose, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

The manual? I threw it overboard along with a lot of garbage, back around Christmastime... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I think a shark ate it... Either that, or some poor marooned pirate with one shot left in his pistol found it, read it, and shot himself. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" /> Thank you all very much. I'd not be exaggerating that I be chomping at the bit to give these here suggestions a try. Soon as I gets the system up and running for the better half, I plan on putting a few holes twixt wind and water.

Spent a week sailing the Rose in around Lunnenberg Nova Scotia. Greatest adventure of my life. A good solid week of hard work and hard drinking. I heartily recommend the experience of sailing a Square Rigger. It will give you a new found respect for those sailor of days gone by. Also Found out after climbing into the Main top then out onto the Main T'gallnt yard that I have a powerful fear of heights. 75 feet in the air, standing on a rope really gets the adrenaline flowing. As would be expected in Nova Scotia we had four days of fog and rain and one beautiful, sunny windy day which made it all worth while.

I have read the information about the build 11 mod and look forward to installing. I believe I will play the out of the box vannilla version for a bit so that I will better appreciate the hot fudge, with strawberrys, pecans and wipped cream sundea version even more.

Cherrio, pip pip, and all that rot.
Thanks again,
Bumpkin
