Let's call this article a relook into the past of RETRO naval "simulators".
Dependent on your gamer age and interests, this particular game series has a tendency to be overlooked in naval gaming history as it now going on 5+ years old.
The East India Company series was developed by Nitro Games and published originally by Paradox Interactive in 2009.
It continued to be updated through 2010 and final compiled into a collection of FOUR games (East India Company (Designer's Cut Edition), Battle of Trafalgar, Privateer, Pirate Bay)
The Gold Edition was released in 2012.
An modified upgraded edition of this same game engine was used for the game "Commander: Conquest of the Americas".
I may cover this in a future article which had even more advanced features, MORE detailed ships (>20), better trading options, direct piracy trade impacts, missions, establishing your own ports, and is set in the Americas and Caribbean.
The series is not 100% historically authentic (what game is really?), but it does cater to nearly every type of naval war gamer and has a significant amount of complexity over just the 4 great naval powers.
Whether you want to be pirate, privateer, command a fleet with Admiral Nelson, or simply be an expanding trader, this game has nearly everything thrown in one form or another.
One of the better parts of the game series is being able to RTS (Real Time Strategy) or DS (Direct Sail) your ships in combat, although boarding actions are resolved automatically.
You do have the ability to pan and move your view as if you were looking as the captain when sailing and fighting other ships.
The ship models are solid as well as crew actions that are well detailed and animated.
The music is drumbeat naval style for the period.
You have the ability to attack cities and towns for ruining trade or plunder, as well as engaging forts.
Much more in depth than the Empire Total War / Napoleon Total War series regarding naval combat.
Build your fleet, expand your trade, and establish an empire!
What is the best part?
The entire series collection is $15 on Steam, and works perfectly on modern operating systems including widescreen resolutions!

This series is worth checking out if you are not familiar with East India Company.
Or as an alternative, Commander: Conquest of the Americas (with ships that are distinguished between military/trader classes and their functionality).
Especially if you are need of a break from POTC New Horizons or CoAS (City of Abandoned Ships) for a taste of something a bit different.
