Need Help Crashing

As for crashes, next time you get one, please post the log files "compile.log", "system.log", and "error.log" if it exists. The first two and possibly the third will all be in the top level of the game installation folder. Also, what sort of system spec do you have, and which OS? NH is known to crash regularly on older,low spec systems. TEHO probably won't crash on such systems because it will be unlikely to even run on them!

After it crashed right at the beginning of a boarding, I'll just do that. :onya

First hint: don't copy and paste the contents of log files! You can upload the files as attachments. Next to the "Post Reply" button which you use to send your post, there's a button "Upload a File". This allows you to attach files to posts. Only certain types of files are allowed, but .log is one of those types.

"compile.log" ends after you've just got into a boarding action, confirming that is when the game crashed. It also has a couple of messages "Error!!! Overup maximum crew quantity (character=0)". This indicates that you have more crew on board your ship than it is supposed to allow. What sort of ship are you using, and have you changed its appearance using the "Appearance" tab in a shipyard?

Probably due to this part:

Bad idea. Above that snippet, code sets firstgun and lastgun to an Items index. If the spread between first and last is greater than 256, because someone decided to add another GUN_ITEM_TYPE toward the end of items init, that part breaks because gunsML is only 256 array elements:

Hypothetical example:

firstgun = 10
lastgun = 500;
gunsML[500-10] = gunsML[490] index out of bounds
 
I think I understand what you mean. This doesn't happen with a normal installation because presumably there isn't such a wide spread between first and last guns, otherwise the game would be crashing on a regular basis whenever an NPC needed to have a gun assigned.

I have added a few new guns, though I haven't uploaded my "initItems.c" anywhere, so they're definitely not responsible for the problem above. I put the new guns into the same block of "initItems.c" as all the other regular guns, which is probably why, when I played a quick test session, some enemy NPC's (random thugs in jungles and a dungeon) had the new guns, and the game didn't crash. But perhaps this would be a better alternative in "LAi_equip.c":

I have the Light Fluyt, freshly bought at the shipyard to expand my merchant activities and my only change was installing 6lbs cannons to start my privateer career.


Regarding the "More crew than allowed"-error: Maybe the officers count additionally? They all fight on deck when boarding.

Exactly. Along the same lines, my initial thought for incorporating a more reliable way to achieve the same logic, but without the bad index, is similar:

I don't know what is going on there. In particular, your versions of "initItems.c" and "LAi_equip.c" look correct, at least in as much as they match up with the files in the 31st August installer and 22nd December update.

You could try putting this into "PROGRAM\Loc_ai". It has the fix which I suggested in post #6. But I don't know why that would make a difference because the bug which @ChezJfrey mentioned doesn't show up with the current versions of "initItems.c" and "LAi_equip.c", it would only be a problem if someone added a new gun to the end of "initItems.c".

There seems to be something seriously wrong with your game installation if you're getting all these crashes. Perhaps try re-installing from scratch. Make sure you're not installing into "Program Files" or "Program Filex (x86)". Start by installing from CD, then use the 31st August installer, then use the 22nd December updates.

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you defrag the hard drive regularly? POTC trashes my hard drive so it needs to be defragged every 2 days or POTC starts running poorly. I started a new game and then obsessed on it and played 18 hours straight with only 1 crash at a known weak spot after first defragging with IoBit Smart Defrag 5.
