Abandon Ship

Homo eructus

Privateer
Storm Modder
Yet another indie maval game in development that I discovered thanks to Picaresque Studio's twitter account.

Abandon Ship (Fireblade Software) can best be described as FTL with ships in a fantasy setting. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of realistic sailing mechanics but the FTL-style doesn't really need them, and it looks like there's a fair amount of depth in managing the crew, using different weapons and fightong in varied enviromental conditions. I'm not the biggest fan of the blocky ship design they're going for, but the background art (waves, lighting) looks stunning, really like a pinting in movement.

In Abandon Ship you take command of a ship and her crew, exploring a diverse, procedurally generated world, taking on quests and dealing with random events. Frequently, you will end up engaging other ships in combat, the player having to employ their best tactics in order to out-manoeuvre and out-gun the enemy.

The game focuses on “Age of Sail” ships in a Fantasy setting, framed in an Art Style inspired by classic Naval Oil Paintings.

Yup, already know the game when it was just announced, one or two years ago I suppose. Immediately caught my interest, even if it will possibly be a Roguelike (I really like Ironcast, but the RNG just pisses me off sometimes).

And fortunately, we will have different types of ship to command.

It's out in Early Access now, fellow mariners!

Estimated time for completition: One year.

It's fun for sure, but is, of course, plagued by some issues and some "placeholder"-decisions, like enemies copying your ship, so you never gain an advantage by buying a larger one. Also, due to events not respawning, the game ends after clearing every map.

I'd say, give it a shot if you can afford it and are looking for some new game in the age of sail.
