Surprise - how to change the number of cannons

There have been many different versions of the Surprise over the years. Some probably had a different number of cannons. :shrug

Do you know where can I find older versions of that ship?
I'd like to find that one with ~40 cannons

Have a look in PotC; we kept several other versions under different names.
There are:
RN_Surprise
HMS_Surprise
HMS_Indefatigable
FR_Boussole
If I remember correctly.

Watching that video, I'm not sure the ships there do have 40 guns. The nameplate on the stern, plus some other details, make me think that's the PoTC "HMS_Surprise" converted to COAS. I can't count more than 30 guns on the ships in the video, and they're placed exactly like those on "HMS_Surprise".

"HMS_Surprise" is PoTC's accurate model of the ship in the film "Master and Commander", and has the "Surprise" nameplate on the stern, as do both ships in that video. "RN_Surprise" is a less accurate version, more suitable for generic use, without the nameplate. There are also French and Spanish versions of "RN_Surprise". All these ships have 30 guns.

"HMS_Indefatigable" is a different ship and does have 40 guns. "FR_Boussole" is the same ship with an early, Royalist colour scheme. There's also "FR_Indefatigable" with the Napoleonic red scheme similar to the French ship in that video.

If I understood correctly, that model is an actual historical version of a "Surprise".

If I recall, that model is what USED to be an old version of one of either two Surprise models (can't remember which).
Because she was so different, we figured at the time it was worth keeping the model under a different name. :cheeky

It's the Unité, a French frigate which was captured and renamed Surprise. The model has 32 guns, which according to Wikipedia is accurate for the original French ship and a bit short compared to how she was when the British had finished with her. That's fine as "RN_Surprise" and her French and Spanish counterparts translate to "Unité class Frigate" when seen in the game.

For that matter, our "HMS_Surprise" is short a couple of guns. According to both "Ships_init.c" and the cannon data screen, she should have 32 guns total - 15 to each side and 2 in the stern:

In fact she has 12 cannons on each side on the main gun deck, one each side on the forecastle and one each side on the quarterdeck:

There should probably be one more each side on the quarterdeck to fill this gap:

Thank you for amswer guys.
I found interesting ship in New Horizons - Essex but I'm going to check if it's possible to make it playable in AoP2.

Do you know if there're some interesting ships in New Horizons which have 36-42 cannons?

Of course it's possible. I'm pretty sure literally any ship could be transfer.

Most likely yes; there's a large variety of ships in there.
Use Notepad++ search to check the ships init file.

Thank you Pieter. I'll check it soon.

I wonder about one thing.
If I take Resource/Models/Ships/Pinnace1 and Resource/Textures/Ships/pinnace1.tga.tx from New Horizons and put them to their directories in my AoP2, will it work? Is it enough to see this ship in my game?

I really want to add Essex, there're a few versions.
However, there's no any folder named 'Essex' in Resource/Textures/Ships/

You may need some more texture files; use GM Viewer to find out which ones they need.

PotC doesn't use folders for ship textures.

You'll need some ships_init.c code as well, of course.

That depends on what you mean by "interesting". ;) Which period interests you, and what calibre guns are you looking for? The various big Spanish galleons such as "Galeon1" have the right number of guns but they're restricted to the first three periods, while the "Essex" types are only for the "Napoleonic" period, so they're never going to meet. But if you want another Napoleonic era frigate, you could try your luck with "HMS_Indefatigable" (and its French counterpart, "FR_Indefatigable").
