Cannot Confirm Sunk ships appear on compass

A.H

Privateer
I've been experiencing this all day.. for 3rd time now and i cannot save game after battle finishes.. the ship is sunk, yet on log it does not show as "sloop ***** sunk by mcallister .... 3225 xp"
only shows "type: pirate ship. 93875793" or something like that.

On compass radar, the red arrow keeps showing. Physically, ship is sunk..
in order to save game or proceed, i had to wait 30seconds to 1 minute while standing in the same spot.. or by moving my ship further away until i'm safe distance to exit battle, in which i can enter world view again.

Has anyone else experienced this before as well?

Sunk ships have always been turning Blue on the compass.
Does that ever happen for you now?

At the moment 70% of times blue on compass and I get xp for sinking.. and I can exit map mode immediately after finishing with all enemies around me.

The other 30% of times.. the red compass keeps showing even after I sink the ships.. I have to keep sailing away from sunk location to get out of map mode, or wait up to 1 minute in the same location until the sunken ship actually "sinks" ...

unfortunately the best i can provide is a screenshot, which i am still figuring out how to make one since my f12 and f13 aren't functioning properly..
i will try next time with ctrl + print screen

I have seen that occasionally. A ship will sink but the icon will remain red until the ship finally disappears completely. It never bothered me as I was observing from a distance so never reported it.

So I understand this is actually CONFIRMED to happen occasionally then?

Might I ask you guys to make a savegame just out of range of the still-hostile sunk ship?
That might make for a good testing case if you can figure that out.

Does anyone have any more details on this one? For now, I don't know enough to be able to do anything about this.

If a savegame isn't viable, please tell me exactly what type of encounters you had this with.
Specifically:
- WorldMap
- Random ship around island (Coast Raider)
- Storyline/sidequest ship
- Random Quest Ship (Governor Ship Hunting/Treasure Quest Pirate/Convoy Quest Enemy)

Did you use false flags at the time? Any other special things to mention?
Since we have NO clue why this happens, any detail might be a clue.

I have seen sunken ship staying red on the radar for some time now. It is some sort of small graphical glitch and is no more than a curiosity to me. When looking in the spyglass the ship is clearly sunk.

This could cause confusion in the heat of battle as the player might alter his strategy to account for a ship he doesn't realize is sunk.

That doesn't happen all the time though, right?
When it happens again, can you take note of some of the circumstances?
Specifically those mentioned in post #6 above?

I'd like to know what distinguishes the ships where this DOES happen from the ones where it doesn't.
My suspicion is it is either a certain "type" of ship or it may be the ones that have "recognized" you for some reason.

Actually, the only times I can remember seeing that was when hostile fleets attacked a fort and got sunk. I saw them on the radar but by the time I got there the ship would be long gone and maybe there would be some wreckage floating around.

I rarely get into battles myself.

I was approaching Willemstad and saw a ship by the port and apparently there was a battle as I saw it catch on fire. When i got close enough it turned out to be a pirate light fluyt of war attacking the fort. I joined in when I got close enough and the fort did sink the pirate ship. It was red in the radar until it sank when it turned blue. So no problems so far.

I'm still hoping somebody will post any illuminating details on this one.
Without further information, this issue cannot be fixed and I might as well archive it.

No confirmation data here. Any time I've seen a ship sink, whether by my gunfire, someone else's gunfire, or because I boarded it and couldn't take it as a prize, it turned blue on the compass.

Then without recent evidence to the contrary, I think I have to call this one "Cannot Confirm".

I do have a theory which someone could test.
Maybe the ship only turns blue on the radar is the model of the HULL is under water. In some cases the masts are modeled in the hull altough in most cases these are modeled seperatly. Maybe these ships which have the masts modeled in the hull have this problem because it will take way longer for them to dissapair under the sea.
Or maybe it has something to do with theire collision box which might go up more then normal?

That sounds extremely unlikely. I don't believe that is the case. :no

The ONLY explanation I can think of is that there was an error with my Nations Relations rewrite where the "hostile state" overrides the "sunk state".
But without specific examples, that theory cannot be confirmed.
Despite repeated requests, I never did get such feedback, which means this is apparently not something that occurs commonly at all.
So either it is actually not a bug or it is EXTREMELY unlikely. Either way, I don't care about this until someone actually reports it again with the details I'd need.

Can you name a ship which fits either of these descriptions? That is, name a ship whose masts are modelled as part of the hull, and name a ship with an oversize collision box. Then I can look out for such ships and see what happens if I sink them.

If there's some way to trigger this, I can check it.

Otherwise, without indications of which type of ship to attack to test @Levis' theory, or without some way to intentionally trigger the lasting "hostile state" as per @Pieter Boelen's theory, all I can do is watch for random ships which may stay red after sinking. That may be why there hasn't been much feedback on this - it presumably hasn't been happening much, if at all. (And if it happens in the middle of a battle, the player is likely to be more interested in the next enemy ship which is still firing at him rather than the one which is defiantly remaining red after sinking. ;))

No way that I know of. I'm just making up possible explanations since I have no real evidence to go on. :unsure

Yep, that's very likely. First somebody needs to spot it to confirm it still happens.
Then at that time, we need all the possible details we can get, such as compile.log, a screenshot of the Nations Relations Interface and a mention of the ship type involved.
Only then can we start to determine what might be the true cause.

But I don't think there is any way to run into that, except by pure chance. So until we hear back, there is nothing to be done.
Nobody reported it in half a year despite it being on the Bug Tracker and me occasionally asking, so I don't think this is much to worry about. :shrug
