Fixed Levelling: Skills Not Increasing

I ran the 19th November installer on a fresh copy of a stock install (previously I'd installed from CD and am keeping that installation, then I copy it and run my choice of Build 14 installer on the copy). Then I started a new game of "Hornblower".

The new "balanced" system for enemies makes it almost impossible to survive combat at first. This isn't critical for "Hornblower", you don't need to go down the Antigua cellar right away as I do, but it could mean serious trouble for anyone who plays "Tales of a Sea Hawk" with a stormy start.

Several reloads later, I'd actually managed to fight my way through the dungeon. After a few fights I'd normally expect my "Melee" skill to be up to at least 2. By the time I left the dungeon, the skill was totally unchanged - still at level 1, 0%.

So I resumed playing the 5th November install, where I had a savegame just after the Martinique land battle. I put to sea, found a couple of small ships, tried to board one and got killed on the first deck. I'd saved game at sea just before the boarding, so I tried again several times, with the same result. I'm in a tier 5 top-sail schooner with crew at "Good" morale, with a good sword (Portuguese Officer's Sword, from looting Barbados cavern), battle armour and Melee 4 boosted to 5 by a ruby. The enemy is a tier 7 armed schooner flying a merchant flag, and I fire a broadside of grapeshot into it before boarding. Normally this would be easy prey. Thanks to the new "balancing", it's almost impossible.

Fencing skill didn't increase at all? That's rather odd; latest test I did was the Malcolm Hatcher tutorial stuff and I do remember getting a level-up there.
If it all works as intended, your skills should all increase relatively fast at first and then slow down as they progress.

I noticed that during my tutorial fight that was suddenly a LOT harder than it used to be.

Fencing skill did not increase at all. I tried deleting "Options", started again and got the same result.

The one about block chances being calculated wrong is probably what fouled up my boarding attempt using the 5th November version. It also appears to calculate damage wrongly; even though I'm wearing battle armour, which should reduce damage by 50% if it doesn't block the hit outright, I was losing half my HP to one swipe, and I had somewhere around 200HP.

Just to be absolutely certain, could you try to play the fencing tutorial with Malcolm? I wonder if you get zero there as well.
Could it possibly be difficulty-related? The Standard storyline is normally on Apprentice and of course Hornblower isn't.

This one is mainly for @Levis' attention, of course.

I always set the difficulty to "Adventurer", so if the problem is related to difficulty then that could explain it. Mind you, 0% increase in skill seems a bit harsh even for "Swashbuckler", let alone "Adventurer"!

I'm not saying it is right. It certainly doesn't sound correct to me. :no
But it could be good to know if that is indeed the variable that makes the difference, because then at least @Levis has a lead on where to look.

will check it tomorrow.
I do remember having this problem before ... it might be because of the exp cap which was build in. with you being level 1 you might not get to much XP. but it still should show something so I will try it out...

My mistake. I tested without the auto level enabled last times because there where some bugs in there. Had to change some logic for that and accedently made the addxptoskill not work :p.
This should fix it. Tried the dungeon and after the first 3 enemies I was level 2 and level 2 melee.
BTW Kudo's if you are able to clear that dungeon on level 1, I sugest trying to get some melee skills somewhere else (your ship perhaps) first before doing that as they are quite tough ;).
