reputation

Pirates like you but everyone else hates you. Overall it makes the game harder, especially if you are trying to complete quests that require you to deal with certain people in certain ports.

Does it help in combat like people run away or surrender? Also does a good reputation help practically or just make it harder to fly a false flag

There is another reputation that helps in combat. You start off as freebooter and progress to promising pirate to dread pirate and so on. It also affects the false flag.

That reputation has a lot to do with buying and selling goods, buying and selling and repairing ships, and hiring officers.

A low reputation means only pirates want to deal with you, a high reputation means the normal colonies will deal with you, and a so-so reputation might let you deal with everyone. But that is a difficult balancing act.

In addition, some of the side quests are not available if you have a bad reputation. You won't be able to do "Saving Toff's Daughter" for a start, because Toff won't talk to you. And you can forget about "Strange Happenings in the Archipelago" because to progress that beyond a certain point you need to talk to the priest in Port Royale and get a job from him, which you won't get without a good reputation.

I forgot about that part. Admiral Saldhana won't talk to you without a good rep too.

Instead of starting a new thread i have another question. I had read that there is a way in ship_init.c to enable random ships instead of just ones from whatever time period. But I cant' seem to find it. I'm still running build 14 beta 1 patch 7 from 2011. Is that why I can't find the setting?

I never go horror of the high seas it ruins the game for me no one likes you and trying to do any thing gets you rejected.

The PERIOD_ACCURACY_LEVEL line is at the top of that file, but wasn't added until Beta 2.5 I think.
Beta 1 Patch 7 is VERY ancient and I would definitely recommend getting the newer version.

Okay so I got the latest version of build mod. Is there a way to turn off perks costing more than one point? I went through internalsettings and didn't see it.
Maybe I missed it.

Set this to 0:
Code:
#define PERK_MULTIPLIER 1 // FLOAT - Default = 1, Perks are set to cost base value*multiplier. Set to 0 to have everything be cost 1

Insted of starting new thread I ask there. I am playing pirate, but my reputation always raising to the top. Sometimes you pick up boat with saviours, sometimes you do good dees here and there, but they aren't actually good deeds, because you profit from doing it, i.e. picking boat in seas replenish your crew. So, how to actually one captain can lower reputation?

At the moment, low reputation basically doesn't do you any good.
Making the game support good gameplay for evil characters is something I've been wanting to do for a year and a half now.
Never have the chance to do it though.

Whack someone over the head with a sandbag, then try to rob them. -1 for a successful mugging, -3 and a chance to try again if they catch you doing it. Sometimes it backfires and the sandbag doesn't stun the target, who then fights back and so does everyone else in the area.

However, as @Pieter Boelen says, low reputation does not benefit you and actually has drawbacks - several sidequests are only available to good reputation characters, whereas there are no sidequests which require you to have low reputation. (Having said that, there are one or two places in "Tales of a Sea Hawk" where an evil reputation allows you to intimidate someone and opens up dialog options not available to good guys.)

@Cheeki: One quick way to REALLY screw up your reputation and nation relations in one go is to loot or kill an item trader (that you know for sure is carrying items).
