Now that Pirates of the Burning Sea has been release we can expect, not unlike SM Pirates!, a flurry of reviews.
First off the bat is from IGN's POTBS website which offers a positive, seemingly evenhanded, review giving it a 8.7/10. Check it out HERE
"If there’s anything in the whole game that was done to perfection, it has to be ship combat. On the most basic level, it’s rather simplistic. You use the WASD keys to raise and lower your sails and to turn your ship right and left. The minimap shows you when your ememy is within range of your cannons and all you have to do is hit the spacebar to fire. But the beauty of ship combat lies in the strategy you need to employ in order to win. For example, if you know that your ship is faster and more maneuverable than the enemy’s, but he has bigger and better guns, then your best bet is to stay away from his deckguns and try and hit him from behind. Knowing your enemy, your own strengths, as well as how to use wind direction and the surrounding landscape to your advantage can make a big difference in ship combat. You can also use different types of ammunition to accomplish different things, ie. damage the sails, harm the crew, or blast the ship’s hull."
Also as a bonus they have an interview with Jess Lebow from Flying lab and they chat about the different features of the game so check that out HERE

While it's not a pirate game it is by Akella so I feel somewhat compelled to write about it. In saying that I am sure there are a few of you interested in this also.
We're continuing to update you on PT Boats: Knights of the Sea's coverage as FileFront has put up a hands-on preview to whet your appetite before the game is released later this year.
"PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is so much different than other WWII games on the market, that hopefully it will be a breath for fresh air for gamers interested in this genre. The sound quality is top-notch, the graphics will be good in the full version and support both DX9 and DX10, and controlling your boat - once you get the hang of it - is a breeze; plus there is nothing more satisfying than sinking a ship that seems thirty-times larger than yours. The full game will include multiplayer options, the ability to wield weapons on some larger ships, participate in night missions with projectors, and take part in both landing and iceberg missions".
So get ready to put out to sea, join the mosquito fleet and learn what it is to apply your efforts in mirrored missions. View the full preview on the FileFront website.

Here's an interesting one for you. Captain Blood, Akella's storybook PC game based on Sabatini's novel has gone missing! There is now no mention of this either at Akella nor over at Playlogics games lineup. There is however still a forum for it over at Playlgic with the last moderator updade in May '07!
I'm going out on a limb here and saying that Akella are not working on this title anymore after the last two titles (Swashbucklers & AOP) were not "best sellers". If anyone has some inside news on this I would be happy to hear.

A couple of reviews thanks to Blues this morning.
Firstly a POTBS review over at a POTBS fansite, so I quess you know what the rating will be like ;) I have had a quick skip through it and it really a review full of rosy praise so If your looking for a reason to buy POTBS head over to Stratics POTBS review HERE
The second review which is for Akella's Swashbucklers is a little more even handed, if you didn't know any better you would think it was the review of Age of Pirates as many of the gripes and positives are the same for the 2 games. What also makes me wonder is why did a Russian developer make a game involving the American civil war, i mean I don't think they are taught enough of it to really make a deep game about it. So that gives me a cunning idea that Akella's next pirate game should be piracy in the time of the Hanseatic League, now that would be a bit of fun :D Check out Gamers Info Swashbucklers review HERE

Pirates of the Burning Sea Released |

And now for the big news of the day, after years of development Pirates of the Burning Sea has finally been released.
I must say I am very interested to see how this takes off, the build up though the years of the community has built a great foundation to start a game off with. And notw Sony has got their hands on it and made the forum as well as the community alot more rigid it could be a good case study for other MMORPG's developers looking to launch their games as well. Along with that is the initial high subscription fee as well as charging a full game price for 30 days of play.
However, my pessimistic views aside, Read More for the full and lengthy press release as well and look below for some of the new screenshots.
There is also a 130+ meg video of the ship to ship fighting, I just finished downloading it and have started uploading to the PA! server. My initial impression is GAWD this game is beautiful the ship models are excellent it the whole theme itself is very well done. Gameplay from the video seems very similar to the POTC & AOP games from Akella, having not played it myself though these are just observations. I would like to know from some of the people who have played both, is it the same gameplay wise?
Download the video in the PA! files area HERE

Another week, another real pirates episode for the faithful. This week only 4 reported cases, the big haul was in Angola where pirates got away with the ships paint supplies, a treasure not heard of since the Spanish gold fleet!
Read more for other tales of plunder.
